In 5 years, which NHL team will be the strongest?
Stole this idea from another forum but thought it was a good debate. Based on prospects in the system and stars retiring from the game, who would you expect to be the most dominant in 5 years?
Oilers? Islanders? Blues?

Buffalo, obviously.
Grigorenko, Ennis, Hodgson is the next Malkin, Crosby, Staal.

Not the Oilers and the Islanders, unless they change management.

Foolish to discount the Red Wings. They always find a way.

I think that Colorado could be on the way up.
The Oilers will continue to stink under their current ownership and management team.
I'd love to see the Islanders improve.
The Flyers are still very young as are the Kings

Not sure about the best, but the Wild have a great batch of youth about to make the jump.

Unless something dramatic happens with player movement as a result of the current labour battle I'd go with Pittsburgh, LA, Ottawa, Minnesota, Florida and Boston.

I think Locke is right, the Wings are always in contention.. their current crop is getting a bit older but with guys like Nyquist, Andersson, Smith, Almquist and Tatar coming down the pipe the future still looks bright.
Also current guys like Abdelkader and Helm that are really coming into their own, they have a good young group of prospects/players to look forward too.
The Islanders have the potential to be a powerhouse, if they can sort out the crap show that is their front office. The right coach could take that team pretty far though, especially with superstar Tavares.
St. Louis is probably the team I am most scared of, they already have a great young team that they are managing very well. Then on top of all that you add talent like Rattie, Shwartz, Tarasenko, Gardiner, Rundblad, Schmaltz, McRae and I know I am forgetting a few.. thats a powerhouse team.
Edit: St. Louis potential team in 5 years..
Perron-Backes-Oshie
Rattie-Berglund-Tarasenko
Schwartz-McRae-Stewart
Gardiner-Sobotka-D'Agostini
Piettrangelo-Cole
Schmaltz-Shattenkirk
Jackman-Russell
Halak

Sorry to nitpick ...
The two in bold were basically traded for each other (Rundblad for the pick used to select Tarasenko).
As well, Rundblad was then dealt for Turris, so Rundblad is in the PHX system.
Back to bashing the Oilers management, as you were!

It always helps when you can add prospects from other teams to your list like Gardiner from Toronto and Rundblad from Phoenix.

Rundblad was my mistake but I wasn't aware that Max Gardiner was drafted by Toronto?

Maybe you mean Jake Gardiner? The defenseman?

I was sloppy with my research on this part, did it in a hurry, but you were extra sloppy with yours.

Five years is a long time with the way the NHL is moving. Calgary could get MacKinnon or Jones this year and then McDavid next year or year or when ever he is draft eligible (getting one will never happen let alone both) and with Baertschi stepping up and Geadreau, Horak, Granlund and Jankowski in the system we could be a powerhouse (definitely not my prediction, but a hypothetical none the less).
Based on current prospects and players I think St. Louis.

If we miss a year and the draft goes down the same way it did the last time we had a lockout, could you imagine if Edmonton got another 1st overall?
I'd jump in front of a bus.

Since Forwards seem to peak around 29ish and goalies seem to peak around 32ish. I will have to go with Pittsbrugh. Crosby, Malkin, MAF, all at their height.

Todd McLellan plays an uptempo style that attacks hard, but they need an injection of youth in their top 6 to stay competitive. They have a good GM, but I think the Sharks are on the downswing once play resumes.
Oh you meant Flames, silly me.

if there's one thing the oilers, jackets, islanders, panthers have tought me, it's that great lottery picks, doesn't equate to on ice success.
on the other hand, there are teams, that regardless of age of their core, etc, are able to continuously build playoff teams/contenders.
In that case, i'd be willing to put money on:
san jose - yes they're getting older, but their GM has proven he is able to find youthful talent, despite being a top western team year in and year out.
Philly - Holmgren is an aggressive GM, who has shown that he is willing to down the unconventional paths in order to get back to being competitive or staying competitive.
Detroit - i don't know much about their prospects, and they are going to be very different without arguably the best defencemen to every play on the roster, but their management/coaching has a way to build a strong team.
I'll through in Boston on that list also i suppose.
