My view of Trudeau is considerably higher today than it was when he first became Liberal leader, but the reality is, he's popular outside of Canada because he's pretty and knows how to work a camera. Within Canada, we get a much more complete view because we see his politics in action.

Gotta say, I've been pleasantly surprised by him. Almost impressed. Sure the debt spiral is a problem, but he gets a passing enough grade for me to not care about all this publicity stuff. At very least I'm glad he's representing us to the world.

Well he's also respected for his stance on climate change and drug policy, two things that were embarrassments for Canada under Harper

I agree that in Canada we see and deal with a lot more of the shortcomings. He hasn't been as bad as many feared, he hasn't been as good as some hoped.
But it can't help but be a good thing that the rest of the world sees Canada as a more desirable place, even if it is for superficial reasons.

Think this is a big part of it.
A lot of people were against Trudeau, but then they saw Trump become president and the feeling changed to "I guess he's alright, could be way worse".

Honestly, I'm not the biggest Trudeau fan and think he represents a lot of the same corporate elites that previous Liberal and Conservative governments have. He's also getting a lot of credit for tackling climate change when in reality he's just following his predecessor's footprints with his Paris targets.
All that said, I think he's been an improvement over Harper and is the best option we have at the moment. If an election were held today, the Liberals would probably get my vote.

Not necessarily a direct question to you, but I somewhat share this sentiment so thought I'd ask a general question to all;
Without getting into the vast amount of topics covered in the Canadian Politics thread, would Trudeau's image outside of Canada/representation of Canada and Canadians, make you forgive him for any kind of policy decisions made in Canada when it comes to election time?
For me, I think I may be leaning this way. I'm not 100% impressed with some of the decision he and his caucus have made, but I'm starting to think our very strong international image at the moment overrides the things he has done which irritates me. Some people would check off "extremely unimportant" on a poll asking how you feel about world image so wouldn't care. But, I feel global image and relations are very important. It doesn't hurt having Trump as point of comparison for Trudeau, but I do have to give him a tonne of credit for how he is representing us.

I strongly disliked candidate Trudeau. His debate performances were obnoxious. I voted for the liberals in spite of him. But since he's been PM, I've definitely warmed up to him. I don't think he's a great political mind (or any other kind of mind really) but he's a perfectly cromulent Prime Minister.
