Nakiska is only good passable if there's snow in the glades.

45 minutes away, stick to the glades and out of bounds past the glades, and you only need to go 3 times for your pass to breakeven.

That's the draw. If it doesn't snow then I'll regret getting one. A lot. That hill is absolute garbage unless there is snow in the Glades.

I have never been to COP. I can't imagine how it could possibly be any fun unless you're into park / pipe.

A real problem I've been having the last couple of seasons is how expensive accommodation has become in Banff and Lake Louise, though. It sucks that it's so pricey to stay the night. Totally not worth $300 for a crappy hotel room.
Mountaineer Lodge mid season is like $120 bucks for a room. Nothing remarkable about it one way or the other, perfectly serviceable.

I can see how it would be fun, Sliver has kids. Hitting the hill for a few hours in the evening with the kids can be a lot of fun.

Especially if you are not waiting in line to get up the hill.

A buddy of mine was saying he stays at the casino in Morley for the evening.

Morley is 85km to Sunshine and 125 to Lake Louise. That's not feasible.

I could see doing the 40k from Canmore to SSV in the morning, but even that is annoying and not worth any cost savings you might manage.

It'd be nice if there was something like the Kicking Horse River Lodge in LL.

85 km, or approx 45 mins is feasible, when the option is to drive back to Lacombe.

Apparently rooms are well priced/new and clean. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I reckon I will give it a try one weekend this year with my kids.

Try the Truffled Pigs Bistro and Lodge in Field. 30K west of Louise so even though you have to drive a bit your not driving with the crowds from calgary/banff. $110/night for two queen beds. The Bistro is one of the better restaurants I've been to, awesome food, great menu and really chilled out. May be a little pricey if your bringing the kid/s(worth it in my opinion) but for a weekend out with the wife, its pretty perfect.

Huh - I grew up there - can't imagine there's many on this board from Lacombe.

Back on topic - skiing is great.

Hah, not many people know about Charleston. I lived there for six months. Can't believe it hasn't burned down yet.

Yeah, like undercoverbrother said, I have kids so that would be a big factor; however, I've come to love the facility independent of having kids. It's an active thing to do during the winter along the same lines of hopping on my bike for a short ride in the summer, or in lieu of going to a movie.

The hill doesn't hold my attention for much beyond a couple hours at a time. It's fun to practice technical skills. My wife and I will do switch days when we go and she's getting to the point of being an ambidextrous snowboarder, which is an awesome skill to have that not enough riders hone.

I'm getting a bit old for the park (39), but I still have enough jam in me to hit the pipe and show my kids what's what in there.

With the hill being so small and the two quads being detachable high speed, you get a ton of runs in during a short time. On the busiest days you aren't waiting more than one minute to get on the chair. Literally. It's nuts. We park at the top of the hill in whatever neighbourhood that is, walk 20 steps and strap in. We're riding within five minute of pulling up to the hill.

COP is the best sports facility in Calgary.

This is the most quintessential "almost middle aged white guy trying to convince himself he's still cool" statement I think I've ever read. Well played.

Anyway, the short wait for the chair thing is huge for them, because I would have assumed a decent wait. So that's good. I see COP as a very poor stand-in for the local hills when I was in Vancouver... ~20 minutes from downtown, open at night after work, so you get some turns in when you don't have the time to drive the hour and a bit to Whistler. The downside there, though, is the lift lines, which are soul-crushing. Those hills just go completely over capacity. It's crowded like nothing anyone who's been here their whole lives has ever experienced.

But even if you're getting a lot of laps at COP, aren't they like 20 second laps? What they have to offer seems to me like it eliminates the point for anyone who isn't just learning. I feel like if I went there all I'd end up doing is short turns to try to burn my legs up and extend the time it takes to get back to the chair, and at that point you might as well just be in the gym doing leg press.

Yeah that's not crazy. I wouldn't go without my family and it is best for learners. But at that, it's exceptional. The sheer quantity of runs you can get in during a short window of time (factoring in travel time) is unbeatable and certainly gives a family a richer experience than leg presses at the YMCA.

lol the tags are awesome

Anyways, thanks CP, I just pulled the trigger on the Ski Canada passes. Can't beat $56 each at Fernie for the wife and I. I was planning on doing backcountry every Saturday in the Kootenays then Fernie on Sunday with the wife, this made a ton of sense for us.
