I used to use RunKeeper to track my rides so I decided to move the 30 or so GPX files I had on there for cycling to Strava. It's pretty amazing to see the progression from riding once or twice a week for 20-30km to consistently riding 150-200km every week.
In 2015 I was averaging 22km/h. The following year I was struggling to maintain 25km/h. Now I'm at around 28-9km/h.

That's because you need to do more hills. Living in Vancouver really helps keep my average speed down by having to climb most places I go.

Yup. The 21km commute route I was comparing has a grand total of 80m climbing.
Still, a 5-6km/h improvement over 2 years of riding makes my long commute much easier.

Went out to Kananaskis last night, was a little unsure how it would be with the giant plume of smoke coming at calgary but it ended up being effin awesome. Did a lap of Ridgeback 1, 2. Bobcat, Strange Brew, Boundary Ridge, Snagmore and back to station flats on 66. It was perfect weather.
The bike needs to be cleaned every effin ride now with all the dust though.
Rode in to work as well and the legs are a little juiced from the 24km 730M ish climbs yesterday thought. haha

Going in the opposite direction, so heading south on 112St (Road to Nepal) was one of the hardest sections of a ride I have ever done. I was completely gassed when I hit 549.

South on 112st is a never ending climb. You think you are at the top and then you crest and then see you have more to do. Rinse and repeat like five times. I think the opposite direction will be just as tough, but i'm sure you can handle it KTrain.

I would suggest not leaving your house until around 11 or so. No sense doing an easy ride like this when it is cool outside and there is no wind.
Give yourself a real challenge as you conquer the road and the weather.

Cycling Thread
One my my cycling nightmares happened on the way downtown this afternoon.
I was cruising along 8th St in Inglewood when a magpie flew out from behind a car right into my front wheel. I saw a poof of feathers, swore and stopped. The poor idiot jumped around for a bit and then flew off.
Thankfully it didn't go into the spokes or that would have been messy for me and the bird.

I've had something like that. Cruising along the south Eau Claire pathway a black squirrel starts running right across the pathway on an intercept course. I see this guy in my peripheral vision but keep thinking "he'll move - these guys are agile".
I keep tracking him, my gaze going lower, and lower, towards my front tire - like a WW2 sailor at the rail, watching a torpedo bearing in on the bow.
He hits the front wheel but luckily he isn't hurt. Looked a little stunned but it had to have been one of the most bizarre things I've had happen on a bike.

I've smoked a couple squirrels before because they are about as predictable as toddlers on the pathway, and lightning quick. One zipped right behind my front wheel as my foot was coming around and I conked him on the head, then ran over him(not on purpose!) He ran off.
The other one made a bee line for my front wheel, somehow got in my spokes for 1 revolution and shot out the other side, then went right up a tree. Those bastards are durable.

Just got home from Goat Creek/Legacy trail. A good 50km. It was nice and clear at the start but by the time we got to Banff the smoke was heavy. My wife took the bus home from Banff, and I had a 20 minute head start. We arrived at home in Canmore at the same time!
Beer o'clock? Uh, ya close enough!

Rode bragging rights and Merlin this morning. Wow are the trails ever running fast right now. Almost like riding on concrete.
Got home and cleaned, polished, lubricrated and torqued every bolt on my bike as I am off to revelstoke on Thursday for a riding vacation

I live in Manitoba and have planned for quite some time to go down to Wisconson and Minnesota to camp and mountain bike.
It's been sunny in those places for weeks. The day we're supposed to arrive this week? Rain. The next day? Rain.

^ ugh, that is frustrating - I am heading to Revelstoke on Thursday for a bike vacation and the current forecast/wild ass guess suggests 5 days of +30 weather...fortunately I like the heat, but this will be a test for sure.
I was looking at my strava data today for Merlin and I have 7 other rides of this trail going back a year. Today I set 5 PB's. It seems a year ago it took me 28 minutes to ride/push from the Merlin/BR intersection to the couch. Today was 21 minutes and I cleaned a rock section that has vexed me since I started riding this trail.
This is why I gave up golf because I could not make any real headway, at least with biking I can see gains.
I should note, the current KOM for this section is some guy with a time of 8 minutes.....so I am about three years away from catching him
