Default NRA calls for armed police officers in all U.S. schools

Now I'm a gun owner myself but I'm not quite sure what to think about this.

In some ways I think... the NRA... a far right gun ownership group and just one more of their crazy ideas.

But then again, its true... if there was an armed security guard at Sandy Hook Elementary, would this tragedy have happened?

'The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," NRA says

The executive vice-president of the National Rifle Association called on the U.S. Congress Friday to act immediately to put armed armed guards in schools.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there were 98,817 public schools during the 2009-2010 school year.

Armed cops at every school is not feasable.

I'm probably the only person I know that is in favour of police in schools. I suppose that might not count as an armed guard, but that's what we're talking about here. I have little faith that gun control will be implemented properly and timely enough to prevent more shootings, so we should be doing something to protect children and teachers in these environments.

Oh, and the NRA is a bunch of wackos. That press conference and the resulting mockery on twitter make that fairly evident I would say! "This is a very important conversation. We won't be taking any questions."

Well done.

I don't believe the NRA is talking about armed police. They are talking about armed private security guards.

First it will be one guard for the entire school, when that fails it will be one at every door, then one in every class, eventually they'll suggest everyone at school should carry.

I was having drinks with close friends from South Africa last night. They are visiting for Christmas, with an eye to move here. He is Cdn, she is SA.

The shooting came up as well as the "armed guards" comments. It was interesting to hear their take.

SA is a violent place. His wife just looked at me and said "that is the very reason we want to move from SA".

She mentioned how every school in SA, has walls, barb wire and armed guards.....

How many policemen would be required to sufficiently guard a single school of say 1000 students with perhaps 10 exits?

So let me get this straight. Let me understand this.

The NRA is composed of right-wing gun owners that, in general, defend their right to own guns because of the possible tyranny of the powers that be: the government. So, in order to protect themselves from the government, they arm themselves, and in turn need to have their children protected by that same government from the armed individuals who can get guns to protect themselves from the government. Is this right?

And, I'm going to make an assumption here, that many NRA members and gun-owners in general are supporters of the tea party and/or proponents of small government. So, in turn, they want the government to impose a new system where almost 100,000 cops are put into public schools all around the country, which would cost close to $6 billion.

I'm not convinced the NRA even believes what they're saying, and I think they realize there's no chance of it ever happening, and all they're doing is making it appear to the general public like they really do give a #### when they don't.

Or you could stop the bad guy from getting a gun.

Well they also blame video games and the media for the shootings, so they're just trying to deflect the issue.

We waited a week for this? The usual fear mongering claptrap. Attack the left, attack the media, attack the video game industry, and we need more guns.

That doesn't work either. Bad guys will always be able to get their hands on guns.

America is turning into a 3rd world sh1hole. I might buy a winter home in Somalia instead of Phoenix, not much difference.

I remember having a cop in high school here in Calgary back in the 90s. I assume he was armed. How is this any different than that?

Do you really believe this?

A 20-year-old-kid with very limited resources is going to have a hell of a time finding an assault weapon when gun ownership and access is limited.

It's not, only multiplied by 98,816.
