A Nevada parole board has granted O.J. Simpson an early release from prison after he spent nearly nine years behind bars for a botched Las Vegas hotel armed robbery in which he attempted to steal memorabilia from two sports collectibles dealers.
The memorabilia was from his Simpson’s pro football career.
He should obviously still be in jail serving consecutive life sentences since 1995, but it sounds like Nevada has a pretty quantitative standard for parole release and he met all those conditions. It'll rub some people the wrong way but he should be free (for this crime)
It's odd (to me) that sports stations covered the hearing and his subsequent parole. He's a felon, not a free agent.
He had been one of the biggest stars in the biggest sport in America, and then he was accused of murdering his wife and her friend. That's a sports story, and a news story.
Sports stations are in the business of making money, and it wouldn't have been great for business to ignore the biggest story in the business.

Yep. I don't think there's any way to overstate how big his story was.
Sucks that a double murderer is walking free but there's no doubt the severity of his current sentence was impacted by what had happened in Brentwood, which legally speaking is certainly not right.
Seeing the all the coverage on the common area televisions today brought back strong memories for me.
I was living in Calgary during the Bronco chase and remember shooting pool at a downtown bar while we watched it on television.
I was living in the US when the verdict was announced. I was in the lobby area of a Marriott hotel in Denver with over a hundred people watching. When the not guilty plea verdict was read, there was applause, people overcome with emotion and crying. I felt like I was living on another planet. I have a much greater appreciation today for why so many people felt the way they did.

definitely surreal at the time and only a few events have had watchers as spellbound... obviously the utter horror of 9/11 will be one of the world events seared into our collective memories, esp as it served as a tipping point in terms of just how many people had video cameras and how this would transform the world and media coverage.
OJ was similar in that it gave CNN the perfect vehicle for their 24 hour news cycle... the nature of the crime, a huge celebrity, the conflict between black and white... it was such a massive event then, it makes me wonder just how out of control it would have been if it happened in today's day and age...

That was an interesting theory at one point. But the OJ Made In America documentary pretty much removed any doubt to this crime ... as unreasonable as it was.
OJ doesn't strike me as the kind of guy smart enough to stay out of trouble and not violate his parole conditions.
Over/under on his return to the clink? I say 12 months.
Are you kidding? He's a money factory right now. I'm betting he has a new agent and publicist and a body guard to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid by the end of the day.
He'll be booked at sports conventions and have a ghost writer at work on his new book, 7 years in the Can, the OJ Simpson story.
Sorry 7 years in the Can the OJ Simpson story, by Crisp E Creme.
People will flood to see him speak and to take selfies with him while he signs whatever memorabilia he has.
This is his great earning period, mainly because he probably doesn't have a lot of time left on this earth, so its time to earn earn earn baby.
