Don't love the term, but I'm guessing Ferland will re-sign with the Flames when this contract ends. He's kind of like Backlund. I don't see what he should ever leave.

I looked up 2016. 25 arbitration cases filed last summer, 24 settled before the hearing and the other one settled before the ruling.

Flames re-sign Ferland (2 yrs, $1.75M AAV)

If Flames fans had to choose for Ferland; do you like the current deal or would you rather Ferland have Hyman's deal?

I honestly don't care enough about Hyman to even think about such a comparison. I am happy about the deal—would have been happier with another year, but this is good.

I feel like Ferland should have got the 4 year deal and Hyman the 2-year.
I guess Ferland feels he can do more than he has done already which is a good thing.

Great deal and low risk. If he ends up being our first line winger he will deserve the pay jump if he doesn't then we don't get bouma'd

Term is blegh. No money opening up that year (other than Bouma buyout), Tkachuk and a likely 20-30 goal Ferland to re-sign, Brouwer still on the books. Ferland will be a UFA too so no way to maximize the asset in the offseason. Only way to keep Ferly will be to trade Frolik+Stone and buy Brouwer out.

Frolik+Stone+Brouwer+ 2M in buyouts + rising cap is more than 15M in cap space, just how expensive do you think Ferland and Tkachuk are going to be?
Besides, if Tkachuk + Ferland are going to be worth 10M+ they'll be awesome and that should be a good thing.
There's also Smiths, Lacks, Versteegs and Stajans contracts ending before that worth 10M+. (Yes some of those end next season, but a smart GM can look ahead and not tie up cap space he might need next offseason.)
EDIT:
To continue on that thought... I like the contract in general, even if it means a big raise in a couple of years. I'd much rather pay a player for what he's worth when we know he's really worth it than risk overpaying him for what he might be worth.
You also can't just focus on trying to keep everybody forever. If any more forward prospects start pushing for spots, we'll need to move somebody anyway.

^^ a 20 - 30 goal Ferland would be a good problem to have in a couple years.

Another example of the Flames philosophy of late when it comes to signing players.
Monahan went 7 not 8
Gaudreau went 6 not 8
Ferland at 2 is risky sure
But the Flames see the market very differently than others. Players are resigning and not moving, better to keep the AAV down to continue to work this 3-5 year window and be able to afford additional assets. Deal with retaining Ferland down the road. Would have taken another million + to get this deal to four years and then that would be it for cap space.
Better to lose a player now and then vs over paying all of them out of insecurity.

Ferland is betting on himself. I would have liked to see another year or two but you have to love the fact that he clearly believes, in 2 years, he will be more valuable than he is now. If he's right, it's not the worst problem to have for the team.

Ferland did a hit on Fan 960 this morning with Boomer. He said that things really clicked for him last year starting with that game in Nashville when he just decided to start shooting the puck. Makes one feel optimistic that what started in the latter part of last year's season will continue this upcoming season. Good guy - hope this year is his best yet!

To be fair everyone clicked when they shot the puck during that game in Nashville.

That's exactly it. Same as Lazar. Except Lazars was maybe mandated more by the management.

Ferland played two years of house league, then one year of AAA, and then was playing in the WHL.
how crazy is it that Micheal Ferland was playing in the WHL after playing a total of three years of organized hockey? What a great story.

Poirier is lucky to have a great role model in Ferland. I'm hoping Poirier says "Ferland did it, I can do it!"

And IMO this all goes back to McGrattan in the organization.

A 2 year deal keeps Ferland motivated to earn that big contract as a UFA. The Flames should benefit from that.

I think a part of it also goes back to Treliving and how much he cares about his players. McGrattan reached out to Treliving when we was going through his rough patch in Phoenix and it was Treliving that drove McGrattan to those meeting then. I think people in the NHL circles hear these things it speaks to the character of the people in the organization.
