Honestly, I still thought there was only 1, and that it had probably closed like the ones in BC.

I had to look up to see where the other one was.

Not much of a fan of his list yet again this year. No way The Guild is better than Deane House. Foreign Concept also opened like a week ago. I know John is a Duncan Ly fanboy but come on, best restaurant in 2016 and wasn't open for nearly all of it.

Last year I think he had Charbar up there at the top. John has lost it. Some good picks but either his bias is showing or he is losing an edge. Really too bad the guy used to pick great spots and was almost bang on.

Hayden Block also deserves mention. That place is awesome. I had BBQ from some pretty renowned places in Austin, TX. I thought Hayden Block holds its own against those places very well.

I went to a place in Dallas in November that was designed in a similar way to Hayden Block (trays, meat + sides, etc..) It was called Pecan Lodge.

I would say it was an order of magnitude better that Hayden block.

I like the food at Palomino better than Hayden Block.

^^^ I walked by the other day, looks to be a place called 'Provision' now. They were closed because it was the day in lieu for New Years Day, but they had their regular hours posted and it looked to be set up inside.

Brought you by same folks behind Avec Bistro, Provision officially opened in early December.

Offering a unique menu of modern European dishes at affordable prices, Provision is one of a handful of new restaurants (Bridgette Bar, Foreign Concept, Deane House) in the city serving Calgarians fresh creations in a stylish atmosphere.

It would be interesting to see how many are still operating in their current iterations in 5 years.

I can't help but to pronounce it Pro Vision, like it's some sort of optometrist's office.

so yesterday, we were in the NW and the wife had been wanting to go to Notable's for a long time - so we went. food and service was fine and at expected levels.

on the way out the wife comments on how we were charged $3 for water. We did not ordered any bottled water, or sparkling water. the only water we had was what was presumably good old Calgary tap water in a fancy beaker type jug.

is this some new trend? or can I somehow blame the NDP?

Did you go by Safeways after that?

Some restaurants have filtered water that they charge for. Usually they are pretty upfront about it though.

Notable also charges for making a reservation. They have a number of practices I don't like, so I don't go there, despite hearing the food is good.

Wait, they do that? I've never seen anyone threaten to charge for resos, let alone actually doing it. That's pretty brutal.

It was a few years ago. I tried to make a reservation and they wanted me to pay $200. Not a credit card to save it, but actually pay ahead of time.
