Icon35 Isles sign Clutterbuck to 5 year extension ($3.5 mil AAV)

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
5 years/$17.5M/$3.5M AAV

New York Islanders @NYIslanders
#Isles Transaction: Cal Clutterbuck has agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension. Details: atnhl.com/2gsNith

seems like a lot for a bottom 6 forward...

Terrible deal

Especially the term?!?

Why would you need him locked up for 5 years - 3 tops
And @ that AAV

That's a big contract for 15-20 points per year. Mind you he brings more to his game but that's a bad contract! Especially when Tavares is nearing FA.

it's just weird. They let Martin go (understandable at that price tag, especially after re-signing Cizikas), then turn around and sign Clutterbuck to an even worse deal? It makes no sense.

that's why some teams will never be successful in a cap world. You don't overpay bottom liners, especially not long-term.

The letting go of Okposo then signing Ladd is looking disastrous as well.

Awful. Term and money are both awful.

I can see the salary - Clutterbuck definitely makes his presence felt on most shifts - but I am shocked by the term.

Since when do bottom 6 guys get both the salary and the term? Since when do they ever get term, period?

I thought Snow was a decent GM working under a tough owner as best as he could, but the last 12 months has really started changing my opinion of him in a hurry.

Further to this. That's a lot to pay for 3 hits a game average. Seems like this should have been in the 2-2.25 range at the top end.

Garth Snow is undoing the few good moves he made 2 years ago, and then some.

Insane. Snow has now fully returned to his vintage antics.

It's crazy, Snow really made some shrewd moves (stealing Boychuk and Leddy for peanuts, trading Reinhart for a fortune) for some time. Looks like he's losing it again.

Countdown to a TSN story outlining how this speeds up Tavares to Toronto process in 3...2...

I wouldn't blame Tavares if he left the Isles...

I was under the impression Clutterbuck was a contract the Isles would consider moving if the scenario was right. Surprised to see them make such a long commitment to a player whose best years are thought to be behind him.

Love the deal. Part of me always smiles when other teams give out bad deals, hopefully Chia and Dim Jim see this as a good deal and start handing out more bad deals.
