Or when the roster is first announced and people feel a player was snubbed. But other than that, I completely agree with what you're saying.

For the Olympics, I've always felt the players should fit some/most of the bill (as other Olympians have to make plenty of sacrifices, including financially). It would obviously need some of the older guys (making huge bucks) to subsidize the younger ones (who will do the same in turn down the road).

Sorry, what I meant was that they take a break in order to play a tournament (Olympics) that the NHL doesn't receive income from. I recognize that they still play an 82 game season. I think I worded that poorly.
Although, Mike F's article said the NHL makes at least some money from Olympic hockey. Although I can't imagine it's as much as they made in the World Cup since they would have to split the revenue.

US Ratings for the final were terrible:
Quote:
The Canada/Europe World Cup of Hockey final scored 494,000 viewers for Tuesday’s Game 1 on ESPN and 296,000 for Thursday’s clinching Game 2 on ESPN2. Comparable figures in 2004 were not available. To put the numbers in perspective, NBCSN averaged 378,000 viewers for regular season NHL games last season.
|
Source
High mark for the tournament was the US-Canada game which drew 766,000.

I wonder what the ratings were like in Europe for the tournament, not just the final

You could probably count the number of people that watched on one hand.

Guys on HF posted the ratings in Europe. They were below World Junior and World Championship games which isn't a surprise.

Probably because they were befuddled by the whole 'team Europe' thing.

Not to mention the 6 hour time difference between Toronto and most of the Team Europe countries. Games starting at 7pm in Toronto would be starting at 1am in Berlin. Who's watching that?

That is really not very much money for an NHL star. It was like 3 weeks, which works out to $28,700/week. That would be the equivalent of making $745,333 in a 26 week regular NHL schedule. No escrow though, so NHLPA win there.

The players would probably be better off just putting the money into their pension funds.

It's still $76,000 which is a lot of money for any body. Players care about that extra money which a lot even said when the NHL all star game winner got a million dollars. Players played to win.

Yep, I think regular people lose perspective on money when it comes to athletes, thinking they're all in the "millionaires who never have to think about money again" boat. Not to true at all.
A) This isn't the 1940's where being a millionaire means you're set and can forget about everything for life.
B) A lot of these guys will make $500-$2mil for like 2-5 years and then they retire. Even a guy making $1.5mil for three years in the NHL will welcome a cheque worth tens of thousands.

And to add it could have been a lot more if the NHLPA divided the money among the players who actually played only instead of all NHL players.

I think Jake Muzzin was the lowest paid player on Team Canada at $4MM/season and Towes at $10.5MM/season was the highest. So $86k worked out to be an extra 0.8 to 2.1% of their earning last year. I wouldn't get that excited if I had a job where I worked half the year and my boss told me to come in three weeks earlier for an extra 1.5%.

Probably not, but (I'm not judging just assuming) 1.5% of your wage isn't EIGHTY SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS!
