Check out my new show, Fossil Records, every Saturday from 7pm-8pm CJSW 90.9 FM
http://cjsw.com/program/fossil-records/
Each week Peter your musical archeologist unearths a CJSW chart from the past as featured in the annals of Vox magazine. Listen to how these building blocks of indie rock echo down through the music of today.

Very cool idea. There was a time when I would make a trip to the record store just to pick up the latest copy of Vox magazine.

I never have time to listen to your show when it is broadcast as Saturday evening is always a busy time with the family. But I will catch it once it is archived. Sounds like a fun show.
As for May 1992, I know exactly where I was -- in China. I was in a co-op program at Waterloo at the time but took the summer workterm off to spend it in China. It was my first time ever over there and it was such an adventure. This was when the country was just starting to move towards a market economy and the Three Gorges Dam project had just been initiated. My dad had the foresight to take me on a cruise down the Yangtze River as he realized the Three Gorges would never be the same after the dam was constructed. I remember sitting on that ship riding down the Yangtze river listening to my Sony Discman and reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Anyway, I know that's not exactly the story you're looking for. But more related to music is that I later made a mix tape for the purpose of evoking memories of my trip. These are not songs about China but rather songs I was listening to in my earphones during my trip. I no longer have the mix tape but I still have the pieces of paper I used to arrange the mix tape. Here were the songs on the tape:
Milez is Ded - Afghan Whigs
Sheela-Na-Gig - PJ Harvey
Do You Love Me Now- The Breeders
If You See Kay - Poster Children
Fishing - Superchunk (this was on the Tossing Seeds compilation, which I'm pretty sure was released the year before)
California Uber Alles - Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy
Gratitude - Beastie Boys
Cracked - The Watchmen
Covered - P.I.L.
Wish You Dead - Curve
A Letter To Elise - The Cure
What's Good - Lou Reed
Taillights Fade - Buffalo Tom
1992 was a great year for music. Later that year, Sonic Youth released Dirty. There was Sugar's Copper Blue, and Pavement's Watery, Domestic e.p. as well. The first Rage Against the Machine album was released that year and that album was so anthemic to me and my roommates. The The released the Dogs of Lust single late that year too, and that became another personal anthem to me during the winter of '93.
Edit: Forgot to mention that Throwing Muses sans Tanya Donelly also released Red Heaven in the second half of '92.

Thanks, I can use that story for sure. If I can thank you personally on-air, please PM your name.
IIRC, three of my all-time favorite records were out at the same time in 1992 - Copper Blue, Automatic For The People and Kiko.

Copper Blue is amazing. I loved Husker Du but I thought Sugar was even better.
I've tried subscribing to your show as a podcast but it doesn't show up in Pocketcasts. I have other CJSW shows subscribed. I listen on the site, but that's a pain. Maybe let the web guys at the station know.
It's a great show, by the way. Love the concept.

Great show, Troutman! Listened to half of it last night and the other half over lunch today. Very enjoyable set list -- it was a nice stroll down memory lane and it made me search Youtube for old Love Battery music videos last night. And the local stuff was a nice treat too. So where do you get the vintage local stuff? Does CJSW have a massive music library vault? Just hard to believe they have the space to store so many local records from so long ago. And I can't imagine they have the resources to digitize everything. Or did you source those older songs elsewhere (i.e., from your own collection or Calgary Cassette Preservation Society)?

Thank you for the kind words! It is a real pleasure to research and broadcast this show.
Now you can subscribe to Fossil Records, and collect your listener reward here:

The Calgary Cassette Preservation Society is my best resource for classic local music. It is a brilliant archive:
http://www.calgarycassettes.org/
IIRC, we have about 70,000 CDs, records and cassettes in our library. All the local music has been digitized. All the CDs we get are removed from cases and stored in thin sleeves in big drawers to save space.
All our welcome to come have a tour of the station - Saturday mornings I am often there.
Big shout out to Dirty Needles for an excellent Prince tribute last Friday. Listen here:

OK Troutman, we have a problem here. I was excited to hear a new show Friday at 10am, the last one was a bit slow for the time. So anyway, they start off with good music, then they start talking and the FIRST thing they do is an Oilers chant! "Go Oilers Go. Go Oilers Go!" Get these guys off the mic. This is unacceptable. UNACCEPTABLE DAMMIT!

The Future Language?
I'm not sure who would do that - maybe the first time anyone ever mentioned pro sports on CJSW.

I did as soon as he said it! The response on air was "uh oh, somebody isn't happy with our Oilers chant". Damn straight!
