We saw Connor McDingus getting frustrated because the Refs were giving him the easy calls, so maybe next year we'll get operation Connor effect aka "Make Connor a man" aka "Its ok puddin, you're ok stop crying, but I ain't calling that"

When he does sign his contract, I would like to petition Thisisanoutrage for another collie mcdoggie installment.

It's pretty close.
I don't think he's an NHL defender at this point in his career.
I'd rather play Nurse 30 minutes a game than play wideman 10.

The only thing that may save Wideman is expansion. The dilution of the talent pool make have a team desperate enough to slot him in somewhere.
That said, more often than not teams will work to get the young guy up for a chance before the retread. Its better asset management. So there maybe a spot for him, but its likely a 7th spot/AHL. Is that worth it to him to play?

I'd have to agree with this thought. Even mid season I 'knew' he would get an NHL contract somewhere (not here). He's a serviceable NHL Defenseman who just needs a fresh start.
However, I now think he has to prove to someone that he actually has some drive left. He just seems disinterested.

No.
He's a formerly serviceable NHL Defenceman who's no longer serviceable and can't play at an NHL level anymore because his game has gone off the cliff and he can barely even skate anymore due to age and circumstances catching up to him.

He's lost another step though and can't keep up to the play and it's not like he's a Regehr type of player in his own end that can milk another year or two out of his career based on strong positional play and physicality.

I still think he has the right notions of what to do. His first pass is fine, he can defend well in a cycle game (where he can play position for the most part). He's not really soft, like some offensive defencemen. But when the game is flowing - when footspeed is an issue, that's his downfall. And I don't think he can use smarts and relatively good IQ to make up for it.
That's not to say he can't get a contract, but it makes it pretty tough.

Contract talks underway between the Oilers and Kris Russell.
Pierre LeBrun ✔ @PierreVLeBrun
Oilers and agent for a pending UFA d-man Kris Russell briefly spoke yesterday to get ball rolling...

Pay that man! Pay him lots! I actually like Russell as he's a warrior, sounds like a good teammate, and has some value as a 4th or 5th defenseman. I just wouldn't want to overcommit to a player that's such a poor possession player.

With Sekeras down, they almost have to sign him because there's not much there. With Russell into his elderly years he'll probably want a 5 year 3.8 or 4 if its shorter.
to which I say
SIGN THE MAN!!!

The painful part for Edmonton though is that sekeras' cap counts towards bonus overages next year. So while they do get LTIR in season relief, they are essentially guaranteeing that they will carry with them substantial bonus cap into 2018-19, the year Mcdavid's contract begins.
It pays to have NHL ready players on the farm.

Only if they spend to the cap. Essentially Half of the bonus this year was Draisaitl who won't have any next year.
