Thank god he signed somewhere already. I guess I won't have to read and listen to some that Flames should get Reimer.

I guess they're worried about Luongo's durability and/or his game falling apart over the next few years. Reimer is a good insurance option in net. I still don't like him.

This is a great deal and as a Panthers fan and seeing how poor Lou's ability under pressure is I thought you would really like this.

It would have been odd to have signed Reimer higher than Elliott. No more Reimer to Calgary rumours that's good.

Since when? All he did last year was make big saves.
I would argue Reimer has more difficulty with high pressure situations.
I just don't see what the direction is here. Reimer isn't a legit starter, and you still have Luongo around for a few more years playing well. It's too much for a backup, and you would still need to find a legit start if Luongo falters.
It just doesn't make sense.

All he did was make big saves? If he had made big saves against the NYI in the playoffs they would have won, he was terrible.

Apparently there is concern over Luongo's hip surgery. Never know. #flapanthers

If I had to guess it has to do with them thinking Luongo will have to play less games to maintain his high level of play. Instead of playing 62 games like last year maybe this year they only play him 52 games and give 30 to Reimer.

This makes me sad. Both because I love Luongo, but I think Reimer is a massive downgrade in net.
Might be a rough year in Florida. Wouldn't be shocked to see them drop out of the playoff picture.
I have not loved many of their moves this off-season.

I would be fine with Reimer if the Flames didn't get Elliot, but wouldn't be happy with 5 years. The money is fine, but much too long for a guy that hasn't established himself as a starter.

At least Luongo's AAV is not ridiculous but stil a huge sum tied up in goalies for next 5 years.

He's still owed almost $7 million per season for the next two years. I can't see him retiring and walking away from that. If he can't keep playing, he'll just go to LTIR and collect the money.
Florida is going to have to leave one of Reimer or Luongo unprotected in the expansion draft next season. Luongo would be a good character guy to do the media rounds in Vegas for an expansion team.

It's probably intended to turn into a 1A/1B situation with Reimer inheriting the starting job in ~3 years. At which point Lou will likely retire.

Only if he retires early. If he just rides out the contract on LTIR then there are no recapture penalties. This is likely what happens with most of these back diving contracts. When the player is done wanting to play, he just has an 'injury' and collects the last of his pay while on LTIR.
I guess it depends how mad Lou is still about how things went down in Vancouver... he could really stick it to them by retiring at the right time.

Lou's contract numbers.
His deal has him making $10 million in 2010-11, $6.716 million in 2011-12, $6.714 for the next six seasons, $3.382 million in 2018-19, $1.618 million in 2019-2020 and $1 million in each of 2020-21 and 2021-2022.

Sure, if he can bribe the NHL's medical staff to certify that he's injured.

So glad we didn't bite on this one. Big overpayment for a backup goalie.
