Except apparently you'd have to pay Gaudreau to get him.

Yeah, I should have continued my thought there, they are both great goal scores, but Panarin is more of a human highlight reel type.

Panarin had 57 ES points last year, Saad had 50.

Their difference in offence is basically entirely attributable to PP time and Paranin playing with Kane.

I'm guessing Panarin's spot on Kane's line will be (eventually) filled by Debrincat, another smallish but highly skilled winger.

With Saad signed for 2 additional years, and known chemistry with Toews, this looks like a pretty good swap for Chicago.

Oshie would need to take significantly less salary. Hawks don't have a lot of room as it is and they would also need to move Hossa's contract for it to really work.

I don't see the Hawks really being any worse after today. I would prefer Saad in the playoffs over Panarin.

Let's see if Chicago can use the Hossa cap space to sign Oshie, who played college hockey with Toews (although he would undoubtedly be the new triggerman for Kane).

If that happens, you can erase my previous statement entirely. Hawks Pens 2018 finals. Ugh.

I think Chicago lost this one.

I think Hawks want Oshie.

Cam they afford him at $6?

I don't think he takes a big haircut to play for the Hawks.

It's not like any of their stars took bargain contracts recently. Why should a mid tier guy look at that and decide he'll be the one to give the Hawks a break?

Reminds me of the Flames reacquiring Conroy hoping they can rekindle past success. Hawks are still a really good team but I'm not buying that Panarin over Saad is the reason they have been eliminated in the first round two years in a row. I can understand why they did it but to me it's a little knee jerk. Pavel Datsyuk was horrible (played scared) in the playoffs in successive seasons against the Flames in 2004 and Oilers in 2006 but the Wings were rewarded for their patience.

Saad is 24 years old. He hasn't hit his prime yet.

Conroy was 35 when the Flames re-acquired him, coming off a year where he had 5 goals and 16 points.

I don't think Chicago is blaming Panarin for their playoff failures the last 2 years.

I do think they think Saad is a better all a round player better suited to playoff hockey, with a contract that runs 4 years instead of 2.

Fans in Chicago have their heads spinning. Most fans are pissed about these 2 trades today and the horrible Butler trade last night in the NBA.

The thing that surprises me the most about this trade is that Panarin is actually a year older than Saad.

Chicago got cost certainty and a much tougher player. Something they said they wanted was to become tougher to play against. The trade helps them out with both those needs.

Too soft on the ice, when it matters the most - with limited exceptions of course. I was tarred and feathered for that comment in another thread about Ovechkin- but i still think most NHL GMs believe this to be the case.
