With that size one would want to see a bit of and edge and more physical play. Could have learned a bit from Chara when it comes to grit.

He'll put up points. But it's becoming apparent he's a one-dimensional player who is badly exposed when he's up against the opposition's better players. Poor defensive awareness and footspeed. May end up being an expensive PP specialist.

It's worth considering why the team that knew him best let him go for picks when it was time to pay him big money.

I hate to be the one to say it, but for the price we paid for Dougie Hamilton, I would almost rather have Griffin Reinhardt.

I actually felt the exact same way from the first week we of the last season. My opinion of him still has not changed. He looked better when he was paired with Kris Russell and managed to dig himself out of that -10 he started off with. But then he started struggling again and thus ended with a -14. Just look at his game logs and you'll see a roller coaster for his +/= last season. I just don't see what management sees in him. He's not going to just instantly become a defensemen who's tougher to play against over night. They really need to try and pry out Jacob Trouba who would suit our team much better.

I may get flak for this, but I think he's actually been using his size a lot more this year.

He's been fine. Slowish start but there are a lot of players who deserve flak over him.

For sure. But take care with +/- stats ... I raised that last season here too and still have the scars from learning how useless that info is supposed to be.

Like CliffFletcher says ... the Bruins let him walk when it was going to cost them real money to keep him.

Since we are probably stuck with him ... I hope you are right. But for now my only recollection of tonight's game is watching some Canuck skate around him to the outside like he was a pylon and get a clear shot on Johnson.

Also his discipline is fine. 46 pims is his season record. Pretty standard for an Nhl defenseman

I think Hamilton has tantalizing physical skills:

Good shot
Size
Good skater
Good passer

But I've been pretty disappointed with his defensive coverage and his ability to win one on one battles. I'm really starting to question his hockey sense and he's really giving me a Dion Phaneuf type vibe.

His d-zone reads haven't even been much worse (if at all) than Brodie's or Giordano's so far.

Whole team has been trash thanks to effectively skipping the pre-season. Give it time.

I get that Hamilton is 23, but in my opinion, his problem seems to stem from his poor hockey sense. Being 2-3 years older isn't going to solve the fact that he's a 6'5" defensemen who plays more like he's 5'6". If he hasn't learned how to assert himself yet and win puck battles yet with this many games of experience, then he may never will. He loses a lot of puck battles and it either ends up in the back of our net or he has to take a penalty to compensate. It's absolutely maddening watching him play defense.

Griffin Reinhardt is terrible. At the moment we're whining that Hamilton isnt a #1 Dman, at least hes an NHL Dman. Once these criteria arent met we can recommence the falling of the sky.

Actually I'm pretty sure they tried to re-sign him, and actually offered a similar deal as the Flames. That's why they were so butt hurt.
