So is the talent pool good enough that we don't need to try to develop players in other places, or is it so thin that increasing the # of players by 3% is going to have a noticeable effect on the talent pool/level?

I phrased it poorly initially. I don't think the NHL talent pool is thin right now. Adding teams could negate any gains made from players developing in non-traditional markets. That's only a guess, though. If I'm wrong, then by all means let's "grow the game." If I'm right, then I fail to see how "growing the game" ought to matter to the millions of us who already follow it.

You honestly don't understand how the game having a larger presence, and all of the extra games, media coverage, and places to go see a game, mattes to those of us who already follow the game?
I know you already called out the guy who mentioned the original 6 teams, but I can 100% guarantee people were making the same statements as you were back then, and it seems to have turned out pretty well so far.

had some time on my hand on the train today and had some fun with the expansion draft simulator. Obviously there's going to be quite a few moves between now and then, but either way, this team is going to have some nice pieces to work with. Some teams are set up very well when it comes to the draft (Hurricanes, Leafs and Devils, for example), others are pretty much screwed without making a few moves (Blue Jackets, Lightning, Wild and Penguins, for example).
ANA - F Jakob Silfverberg - $3.75m
ARI - F Jamie McGinn - $3.33m
BOS - G Malcolm Subban - $0.863m
BUF - F Johan Larsson - $0.95m

not a lot of firepower up front, but very nice defensively and especially in net.

They would need to give some UFAs some big money to hit the cap floor though, correct? Just at a glance you might not hit with the roster you have.

Nice strawman argument. Who said anything about going back to six teams?
Again, how does "attracting new fans" benefit those of us who already love the game? Why should we care?
|
I used hyperbole to demonstrate that going from 6 to 30 teams hasn't diluted the talent pool.
And it shouldn't. They're not trying to benefit existing fans. That's my other point. You shouldn't care.

I actually didn't keep the cap floor in mind, but looking at the rules, my roster would be compliant. Looks like Vegas must choose players with an aggregate cap hit of at least 60 percent of the salary cap. Given that the cap sits at $71.4m, they have to select players with a cap hit of at least $42.84m. The above roster has a cap hit of $46.873m.

There will be some bad contracts made available is my guess (though they may all be NMC's, which is part of what makes them bad).
They might be able to climb close to the floor with a couple of those if they can be had.

Comparing the Expansion Draft Simulator with the list of UFA's at Capfriendly and I was kinda stunned to see the list of 35+ aged players who are going to be UFA's at the end of this season. Granted, a lot of these guys are long retired and it's just their contracts coming up, but imagine this team ten years ago:
Jagr - Datsyuk - Iginla
Marleau - Thorton - Williams
Doan - Savard - Gionta
Kunitz - Fisher - Neil
Pronger - Campbell
Streit - Markov
Roszival - Oduya

Miller signing in Vegas makes all kinds of sense, it's not California but it's close to LA and his wife.

Was at the Stones concert in Vegas. T-Mobile arena is incredible. Mick opined on his name choices: Blackjacks, Hangovers or Hookers.

Black night sports and entertainment is already the company that owns the team.So I am guessing it will be Black Knights
