Default Jailbreaking Apple TV2 - I need a crash course

Looking for a video tutorial or (shudder) written instructions on jail breaking AppleTV2, mostly so I can use it to stream .AVI files from my computer....In other words I need to learn how to get Plex working too.

I apologize, I know there's probably posts on how to do this in other threads, but I started starting and wasn't having much success.

Any help would be great!

I'm interested as well.

Other than steaming different file formats to your Apple TV, what other features / benefits are there to jail breaking it?

Not sure but hopefully porn factors into it somehow.

Being able to run XBMC is probably the #1 reason.

Seas0nPass should work, then install XBMC after you jailbreak it.

Ok, so I got one of these for Christmas and actually have time to fiddle with it now.

How hard is it to revert to stock software if you decide to for some reason?

It should be fairly straightforward to do a restore with iTunes.

But just be aware that while most of the time there's always a way to get back to square 1, a person is still taking a risk of bricking a device whenever you update firmware.

So what is the difference between xbmc and Plex? Do they do the same thing, ie media players?

Thanks.

XBMC is better. Does not need to transcode as it stores all the codecs within the app. Plex runs a server app on the computer and then transcodes it to the ATV.

XBMC requires no server app, just uses SMB sharing etc.

I tried out both XBMC and Plex on the laptop before I take the plunge and jailbreak the ATV2. XBMC was a better experience, IMO. Plex had some freezing and audio output issues that I didn't have with XBMC.

With XBMC and a jail broken ATV, can you still use the regular functions of the ATV? Or will I lose the itunes functionality of it?

Awesome info, I started looking around the net yesterday afternoon and the amount of information is overwhelming. This sounds easy enough using the links given.

That said, I'm sure I'll brick my ATV trying to jailbreak it tonight.

You lose no functionality at all.
