Default Nestle has no soul

This has been trending upwards ever since last week when Nestle outbid another Ontario town for their own drinking water well.

A petition has been started to boycott both Nestle and purchase of any bottled water.

Nestle themselves have had a pretty piss-poor track record over the years, but their chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe's statement that water isn't a human right is astoundingly obnoxious and ignorant.

Of course, there is this too:

Of course, some corporations are just 100% pure evil. Is Nestle?

I'd like to open it up for further discussion and action from your friends and family.

Isn't this a government water management issue and not a nestle is evil issue. Water in general in Canada has been under priced and wasted with Agriculture use being the biggest user of water.

How much water relative to Nestle do the farms around hope and Guelph use?

From the globe article Ontaio uses 1.4 trillion litres per day and the bottled water companies use 20-30 million per day or a perverbial drop in the bucket.

Farmers don't pay anything for their water and consume .5% or about 700 million litres per day.

I have a friend who once told me the reason he drinks bottled water and not tap water is because "I'm not a peasant".

I don't have an issue with bottled water and drink it lots at work because it's convenient, but when people start acting like tap water is cheap or disgusting it makes me want to smack them upside the head.

If you're working in an office job, you don't really have a good excuse to drink bottled water either...what's wrong with refilling a glass of water or less-disposable version of a water bottle?

My ex girlfriend's family used to act like I was crazy when they offered me bottled water and I would say "no, tap water is fine."

This is Canada, not the third world. Especially in Calgary, we have the best tap water on the globe.

What did you expect the company to do? If you want to blame anyone, blame the municipality that did the auction.

Outrage for outrage's sake

Calgary's water tastes awful.

When I moved here I had to get a filter.

I remember a while ago (within two years) an article showing that Calgary had the best tap water in the world. Now I can't find it, weird. Apparently it's Vancouver now, although I just moved there and the water tastes weird to me.

Tap water in a different place will always taste weird compared to what you're used to.

Either way, the point remains. This is Canada. The tap water is just fine.

How do you "waste" water?

Drink water
Piss
Treat sewage
Water back in river

The worst case is it evaporates and the cloud moves over the ocean. Now its all salty. Bummer.

Fresh water is a finite resource if you use it faster than it naturally replenishes.

I will drink tap water before bottled water in the majority of situations, but I do appreciate the convenience of having bottled water to take camping and any other outdoor excursion so I am not completely opposed to it.

It was bottled water that got me off pop. Instead of reaching for that can of coke in the fridge I now reach for the bottle of water.

This is really the only reasonable time to use bottled water IMO.

I buy it sometimes if I'm really thirsty and that's my only option, but I always feel like a butthead whenever I do.

I recall a conversation with some folks, they were bitching about the price of gas, while drinking $4 bottles of water. I told them they were stupid.

I had an Econ professor that would say this at the beginning of every semester for his class.

"People that buy bottled water have no right to complain about the price of gas!"

Peter Tracey. What a cranky old gem.
