The plans show that they are eliminating the lights at 29th.

If you look at the roads underneath, it's not really less complicated.

The average Calgary driver is too stupid to properly navigate a traffic circle

I can't see the tunnel option being a good idea.

If you look at the area, most "new" developments have stopped within 2-3 lots from Crowchild, presumably as people know it's going to get appropriate the land. These lots are mostly for setback, not roads so I suspect the "rich" houses will not be raised. They may need some serious sound barrier work though.
Looking at Google Maps, there's one new infill on Broadview (2 25 ft lots) that will torn down if the non tunnel options goes ahead.

Is it just me, or is there no way to get from east-bound Bow Trail to Crowchild Trail...even in the longterm plan? Maybe I'm missing something, but that seems like a pretty big oversight.
Btw, all this stuff is exactly why the City has to be smart with projects like CalgaryNEXT. These are some seriously expensive endeavours.

I guess you still gotta go do that weird little turnaround.

This was noted in the previous phase of engagement, which you can see here: http://www.flipsnack.com/islengineer...o-phase-4.html
Long story short - it would be difficult, expensive and require extra property to make Bow Trail all turns.

Which plans? These ones don't go that far, and anything I've seen about the Stadium Shopping Centre redevelopment don't mention any significant changes to that intersection.

Don't worry, the City has no money to build it.

Haha, they will when they raise our property taxes by 10% each year for the next 10 years getting ready for these improvements.

Avoid it for the next decade because of how bad the current conditions are.
Avoid it for the following decade because of this work.

The city lacks collector roads on their major freeways, so I don't mind seeing that for the portion between 24th ave to 16th ave to ensure safe weaving. Deerfoot badly needs these at some sections.
I like the tunnel option since it does two things, it allows Crowchild to serve its primary function, and opens up a new urban boulevard corridor right above it. University Drive NW would essentially go from the University all the way to Kensington Road. That's great development corridor potential there. And with that, it also gets the job done in connecting the communities of Hillhurst and Parkdale together.
It would cost a #### ton though. Plus lots of a homes on the east side would have to be removed. (Although could be developed upon again once construction is completed)) But it appears that with the alternative option, it would be set up that if they ever wanted to upgrade to it, it's possible. So the question is which one to ultimately plan for?
The at grade option is okay since it removes lights, until the they say the speed limit would be 60KM/H? WTF? That would defeat the whole purpose wouldn't it? It needs to be a freeway speeds in order for the whole corridor to address the whole purpose of the study.

You are right. I quickly looked through the plans this morning and mistakenly was thinking that the underpass/interchange set up to the west of Crowchild was 29th instead of University Drive.

So I'm looking at the Central Tunnel option. Correct me if I'm wrong but if you are travelling south on Crowchild, and want to turn on 5th ave NW or Kensington, you'd have to exit West on 16th Ave and then go through all 3 roundabouts? Doesn't seem like a horrible option but it's certainly going to be confusing at first.

I was puzzled by that at first, the rationale for that might be to have people take the EB 16th Ave off ramp and get to Kensington Rd via 14th St / 10th Street. Takes traffic off of the relatively residential Kensington Rd.

I went to one of the city engagement sessions about this a couple months ago. According to the person there, the bridge is due for major rehab work next year, and that widening to allow an additional lane each way can be done at the same time.
