Crowchild Trail Upgrade Concepts
The City of Calgary has released 7 concepts for the short and long term upgrading of Crowchild Trail.
Looks like they are looking for public input.

That's a lot of homes and commercial space razed for the improvements at Crowchild and Kensington.

So they are planning to make it free flow the entire way?
That'll be a huge win for the city but wow I'm glad I don't live near there. That's going to cripple the area.

It is pretty much necessary for any notable improvement to happen though.

The long term plan for a tunnel from Kensington to the University is interesting. I can't imagine the construction chaos or the cost of that though.

Looks interesting but the long term intersection plan at 16th and Crowchild needs to be designed without a traffic signal. Traffic needs to flow freely along 16th from 19th street down to Bowness.
The tunnel is an interesting idea but for quite a while now I've thought that the best idea for Crowchild is to build a raised, freeway style deck that goes from around Flanders to 16th Ave or 24th Ave which would be three free flowing lanes through that corridor. Keep the surface roads under the new deck for access to the various cross roads (33rd, 17th, Bow, Memorial, etc.)

Happy to see things finally happening, this project is 15 years over due. Is widening the Bow River bridge really a 'short term' thing though?

Definitely needed. I used to be going from Bow Trail Eastbound to Crowchild northbound to Memorial Eastbound on a regular basis, so that was the first thing I checked. Would have liked to see them get rid of the whole 10th Ave jug-handle turn thing for that particular maneuver, but at least it's a lot safer now with 10th Ave connecting onto Crowchild on the right rather than left.

Some traffic engineer get a new toolset? 16 ave south to Crowchild...ugh... And oh good, another set of lights on 16th ave over Crowchild. 3 sets of lights over what, 500m? Brilliant!

The signal is on 16th right? I can't open that link for some reason.

Yes. Crowchild passes under 16th and they planned a MacLeod/Glenmore style intersection along 16th Ave. It is a horrible idea.

FWIW, there are three lights on Elbow Drive over Glenmore in about 250m, and it works alright. Lower traffic road, however.

There are traffic lights at 29th Street, Banff Trail and 19th Street. Those aren't going to disappear, so what difference would it make it add this one at Crowchild? The illusion that 16th Avenue should be freeflowing is kind of strange considering the area surrounding it.
I mean...if you wanted to raze about 50 more houses I suppose you could get your perfect world solution, but we know how the public took to that idea in 2012...

Look at that spaghetti mess east of Crowchild. Does that look like an elegant solution to anyone? There has got to be a better design.

If only there was some way to provide feedback on what you were seeing...

Some of those rich folks along Crowchild will be fighting any development tooth and nail.
Heaven forbid that they get disrupted.

I wonder if there's any long term plans for improvements to 16 Ave between 10 St and 29 St NW? Still, I'd take improved flow on Crowchild any day if it means one more light on 16th Ave for now.

Traffic circles are always a more elegant solution than lights. The more we use them, the better.
If you look at the roads underneath, it's not really less complicated.
