I would assume that in the next 48 hours we're going to start seeing more Nato aircraft moving into the surrounding areas. I would also expect to see an emergency meeting of the UN which will be completely paralyzed by Russia and probably China.

The Ukraine situation is about to get way more complicated.

I'm trying to get a hold of my family in Malaysia, but it's midnight there right now. Trying to find out the status of my cousin. I believe his flight left the same time, but I have no idea which airline he chose.

I'm not a religious person at all, but in times like this I do say a little prayer for the safety of your cousin.

I'm hoping for the best.

I hope he's fine TheyCallMeBruce.

What does anyone stand to gain by shooting down a commercial airliner?

Saw a photo of a section of fuselage sitting in the middle of a road, looks like the plane came apart in the air.

It was almost certainly an accident. Whoever fired the SAM* probably thought they were shooting at a military aircraft. The question now is, "Who fired the missile?" The way I see it, there are four possibilities:

1. The Russian military
2. The Ukrainian military
3. Rebels using SAMs provided by the Russians
4. Rebels using SAMs "acquired" from the Ukraine

*Edit: if, indeed, it was shot down by a SAM. I'm always hesitant to jump to conclusions until the crash investigation is complete

Be careful looking at photos of the crash. You can see human bodies / parts strewn about the wreckage.
