I am assuming you can give give them the bottles and decline the refund? Seems like money put to good use.
Yes, they have one-way bins placed inside the drop off building (I think they may be some outside too) for people to just chuck bags into if they get tired of standing in line).
It's a great cause (and they have the warmest pool in the City)
They are amazing. They even provide you with massive bags/bag stand for your bottles.
This is awesome. I used to just put my bottles out back but the local pickers have completely ruined it for themselves. They leave garbage everywhere and put half the blue bin in the black bin while rifling through. I started leaving my bottles on the fence to prevent this but they still make a mess. What's the point of a black and blue bin if they're going to mix it all together anyway? Every week when I check to make sure the bins aren't being blocked I have to clean up a pile of garbage that has been left in the alley.
During a sociology class in university, the professor showed us this documentary.
While it's dated, it gives a glimpse of a part of Calgary's bottle picking community.
If I remember correctly, this fellow in the thumbnail froze his feet while picking bottles. After his amputation, I drove home a couple of times when I worked for calgary Handibus.
The amputation required an end to bottle picking and his independent lifestyle. Folks found him a place to live but as a independent kind of guy, he was having trouble dealing with everyone's assistance.
I heard that he was profiles in a documentary. when I had him on the bus, I recall that I mentioned his appearance in his documentary as "when you were self employed." He misunderstood but when I repeated that I considered his bottle picking days as "self employment" hebsat up a little straighter.
