Good for him - he deserves it if true.

As for his qualifications, how does anyone really know if he is qualified or not? Flames have been grooming him since the day he retired. He has been responsible at various times for basically everything a GM could possibly be responsible for, starting out with scouting on the road. How competent is he at everything? I doubt there is a single person on this forum that knows how competent he is or not, but he has definitely been getting ready for this role.

Some podcasts I was listening to were speculating Buffalo would name an experience POHO and then a green GM. So this would fit that narrative

Step 1: Get hired by Buffalo.
Step 2: Trade Eichel to Calgary.
Step 3: Make like a ninja back to Calgary.

that seems more plausible, considering they obviously were not happy with the progress that Tim Murray had made there...his lack of experience was cited as something they didn't want to repeat

Hope for the best for Conny! just need to ensure that you don't leave for a place that doesn't really give you a chance for success. So, that's not only, roster based, but also the quality of prospects and the amount of backing Pegula is going to give you to right the ship.

Learning on the fly as a rookie GM is one thing... learning on the fly when the organization itself is not on solid footing make a tough task almost impossible imo

funny seeing both the "he deserves it' crowd and also the "what does he do as assistant manager" in the same thread. unless someone knows something the rest of us dont, the only way he deserves it is based off peoples perception. Personally as much as i think hes a good person, he has never struck me as a GM, and a guy you want making the tough decisions. but that opinion is as baseless as the "he deserves it" crowd.

I would obviously wish him all the best for 80/82 games each year.

Good to see a great guy like Conroy potentially getting an opportunity. Better them than us taking on a rookie GM. Plus, he'd be on a much shorter leash in Buffalo than in Calgary, since he's not a Sabres alum.

Hmm...Dean Lombardi as POHO, Conroy as GM, Darryl as Coach?

I would love to see Conroy as Darryl's "boss".

Wow, Conroy has been in management since early 2011 (I don't recall him taking time off after announcing retirement). I wouldn't have guessed that he was ready to be a GM position this quickly. He must be impressive if he's already being considered. Good for him.

He's great with the media and clearly a smart guy. He's also from the NY region so I can see the interest there.

Imagine for a minute if Buffalo were to hire Conroy as GM and then later, scoop Treliving up as POHO...

Conroy's been a fantastic ambassador for Calgary and despite it being a loss for us, should this pan out, I would find it very difficult to begrudge him this success.

So you don't know what he's done either then.

seems like there is a geographical fit for conroy to go to buffalo.

i'll stay out of the is he experienced enough to do the job because I don't know exactly what he does day to day and even if I had strong feeling one way or another it is not like pegula is going to call me and ask.

the Lombardi/conroy tag team makes some sense - with the exception of lombo moving from LA to buffalo as that seems like an extreme move.

Seems weird that local news outlets are reporting this but not one insider has reported this.

Tim Murray was a green GM - not sure Buffalo will go that route again in hiring Conroy.

I think he's been more involved than we think. I imagine he's done a lot of work behind the scenes talking to other teams and the league has taken notice. That said I don't know if I would be comfortable with him taking over the Flames right now. It just seems that things are going a bit too quickly. We will have to see if this rumor has any legs.

So he goes to Buffalo for a couple of years to cut his teeth as full GM, then comes back to Calgary to take over when Tre steps down having won us a cup?

I like the plan!

I would rather not renew Tre and instead promote Conroy to GM here in Calgary. The organization has been grooming him and I would hate to lose him. Never liked Tre from day 1 and don't feel he is tbe GM of the future.
