Just saw the poll. So almost 98% of Calgary hockey fans say yes to bringing him back. I don't think any Flames GM since the the Stanley Cup would have had a response like that. Get it done Burke!

Unless this is fake news of course...

Perfection simply cannot be the standard. The best teams have consistency in their management and coaching. He has been way better than he needs to be in order to be retained, when you consider that the alternative is another period of turnover and change in tone from the top. That just cannot happen right now, in my opinion.

Re: drafting, he hasn't been around long enough to judge his effect on our draft results.

Many of the people who voted to not bring him back are not Flames fans, to boot.

He should be brought back for sure, however I don't really want the team to go long term - 2 years would be ideal in my opinion. As it stands now he has improved the depth and competitiveness of the team but has also made some key errors along the way, which should be expected of a rookie GM.

The fact he has been unable to address the goalie situation long-term thus far, combined with a few questionable free agency signings is troublesome. I also want to see how he and his staff handles drafting well outside the top 5-6 picks this year. If he can clean up his next year or two on the job, I'd be behind the Flames bringing him back on a longer deal at that time.

I would actually like him on-board for long-term. I've liked what he's done so far quite a bit, and I think having some stability upstairs allows a GM to think long-term. He is the kind of guy that can do great things for the long-term.

We're seeing the effects of it now, but look at what Alex Anthopoulos did to the Jays. There's a few examples of it each year I feel, but AA was the most blatant example of a GM making big splashes now to try and stamp his tenure with success. If he had another 5 years on his contract he'd likely have avoided emptying the cupboards.

Fletcher only got to be the best GM in Flames history because he was here for so many years. He had a good decade where he was left alone to ****-up and learn on the job. Now, these days, it's impossible to expect anyone to have a 20-year run in the position, but letting Treliving go now would be horrible. He is already better than anything that has been around since Fletcher, and presumably will only get better with experience (no half-measures to address goaltending, no contracts for the likes of Brouwer, etc) from here on in. How stupid would it be to change horses from a very competent guy who has put in his "learning years"? I had despaired of this franchise during the latter years of Sutter insanity and Feaster buffoonery, but if they bungle this now...

This is actually brutal.

How is the GM supposed to conduct business without the certainty of a multi year deal? If no deal is reached, how are they going to find a new GM fast enough to begin the summer work?

There's gotta be something behind the scenes. My money is the Flames being stupid, but it could also be Treliving asking for huge money.

Seems odd to me. Unless there is a gentleman's agreement already in place, I would think it would be difficult for Treliving to conduct off-season business without knowing if he'll be employed.

He is employed till June and both parties want to get it done so when there is a lull in the season they will sit down and finalize this over lunch. Right now there is still a bunch of scouting and the Heat in the thick of a playoffs run (hopefully). The internet just likes to worry and speculate.

Maybe he took a vacation? In a job where there isn't really ever a good time to take a day off, this could be a nice time to take a week or two and get away.

Ken King's comments on the "Big Show" made me feel a lot better. Listen at about 14:10-

http://www.sportsnet.ca/960/the-big-...king-big-show/

King- "Great hockey operations management"

"I don't think there will be any surprises"

Tre is generally an excellent GM. That said, I hope contracts like Brouwer's and non-definitive goaltending like Elliot are lessons for him.

On the other side of the coin, I think Tre is positioning guys like Jankowski, Lazar and Gilles well to succeed by being patient with their progress.

I hope he learns his lesson and gets a proper goalie coach. I doubt it matters which goalie BT acquires, they will crash & burn if Sigalet sticks around. The upgrades he made couldn't even win a single playoff game.

But if there are going to be surprises he wouldn't talk about firing him he would just fire him.

You know, in keeping with how King delivers messages and eases concerns.

Does Tree want to come back? Does someone offer him a better opportunity? Somewhere with no Ken King bumbling around, no ownership meddling in hockey ops and no Brian Burke being truculent and stealing the spotlight with his hair and untied ties.
