Coup fails when you cannot secure the people you are trying to overthrow. They didn't have enough support or were too poorly organized to keep Erdoğan from landing and it is over after that.
Any way you look at it this the Turkish nation will pay in blood. Erdogan stays in power while becoming more of a dictator than he already is and will likely have the backing to completely rewrite their constitution. This will lead to a greater loss of life to remove him when the people finally get fed up with the corruption and his Islamists antics.

I think the scary part of this is what it says about the Turkish military as the correcting moderate force in Turkish politics. If half the military didn't support this coup, it's unlikely that progressive support is going to grow in the future.
So does this go down as the shortest coup in history?
Yea pretty short. My Turkish friend is convinced this was a false flag operation to root out those disloyal to Erdogan. This way he has an excuse to seize more power.
Like them? Maybe not, but pretty much every Western nation has backed Erdogan now, including the US and UK. Whether they still back him after he goes on his likely rampage against the opposition we'll see, but for now he basically has their backing and that's all he needs to pull things like this off. I do wonder if we might see some kind of civil war in Turkey with the non-Islamist's fighting off what will likely be an attempt at further reducing secularism.
Edit: Also obvious this list of judges to go after wasn't just drawn up after the coup started, he already had the list made up, maybe even long ago. Another suggestion that Erdogan was behind this whole thing to consolidate power. He seems to have this all pretty well planned out.

all in all, this was the worst thing that could happen. The coup was apparently not organized enough and not big enough to ever succeed, and even if it did, it would have probably led to a civil war, which is horrible for everybody. Now that the coup has failed miserably, Erdogan can probably do his thing to gain even more power and further undermine democracy without having to face any backlash.
and the more I think about it, the more I buy that Erdogan was behind this #### in the first place.
Yea the police and judiciary were almost all on his side during the coup. This was planned by Erdogan, there is no way they could investigate that many judges that quickly. Purge of the government was planned from the start and I bet all of those female reporters talking about the coup will be wearing headscarves this time next year.
