Default Military Coup ongoing in Turkey

Prime Minister of Turkey has just announced in television that there is an ongoing military coup attempt. The military has started disarming the police and has blocked bridges in Ankara. There are reports of gunshots.

News are kinda scarce, but I'm sure they'll start flowing in soon.

My instinct is good about time, but it's hard to say whether it will turn out well.

I'm really starting to doubt if I can keep my 2 day layover in Istanbul this November. I was still gonna go through with it after the airport attack.

Turkish military is traditionally secular is it not? Perhaps they had enough of the swing to a religious state Ergodan seemed to want?

Am I mixing up my countries and the stances of their respective militaries?

With any luck Erdogan is out. That would be fantastic for stemming the flow of resources to ISIS as well of cutting off the flow of oil out of the area.

The Turkish military will remove a government if they deem that it is violating the separation of religion and state. A military coup in Turkey is not a bad thing, Erdogan had to go.

Turkish military is traditionally secular. They kept Turkey moderate and pushed them towards the EU in the first place with a policy towards economic growth. Erdogan and his Islamists destroyed all that. Curtailed press freedoms, started teaching conservative forms of Islam in schools, rigged elections, bought oil from ISIS and sent arms back the other way. It will be a good day when he is gone.

Mind you I don't know what this will do to the stability of the country. He purged a bunch of the secular military awhile back so I don't know how the coup leaders are.

This. He tried to purge all the secular officers and generals. The military have always been the counterbalance to Islamic influence in politics there.

When you say "purge" are you talking Stalin purge or unemployment purge?

How do you organize something like this without tipping off the officials you want to overthrow? It seems like a massive undertaking to plan and execute while keeping it somewhat a secret.

The fact this happens at all, from a supposed NATO state, and they didn't get their guts stomped out all over the northern Horn of Africa proves what a joke our current allied treaties are.

Hopefully this will square things away. First NATO nation state on the border with ME countries needs to be a strong one.

Purge as in everything except execution. All military generals from the last coup attempt were jailed for life on treason charges.
