James Cook @BBCJamesCook

Stabbing suspect Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, appears in court in Portland, Oregon, shouting: "You call it terrorism. I call it patriotism."

It starts with people who say/post a few questionable things, while society allows their bigotry and hate to slowly ferment. What starts off as benign seemingly transforms into something cancerous and dangerous.

I feel like we're going to see a rise in home grown terrorism in the West that will rival anything we're seeing now from groups like ISIS.
Not that white nationalists, especially those willing to use violence aren't always a concern, but is that movement really on the rise? Seems like in the past they've had a lot more support than now. In the 80s they had major politicians running on that platform.

man, stuff like this sends a chill through me...

I would like to be believe that I would join in in trying to get the guy to tone down the shouting, especially towards two young girls whom aren't in a position to defend themselves...but something like this has to give you a bit of pause

feel terrible for the families of the good Samaritans who were simply trying to do the right thing here...

Maybe a man of such subtle nuance such as yourself can tell us the difference between an authoritarian Tankie and an authoritarian Trumpet?

It's almost as if politics is more complicated than left or right of an arbitrary line and everyone who thinks Muslims are sub-human are giant pieces of #### regardless hmm?

To be honest, I don't consider this terrorism either. I don't think the guy was planning on murdering two innocent (and I assume white) bystanders to send a political message. Terrorism is about sending a message and inciting fear.

That said, he should serve two consecutive life sentences.

Who called it terrorism? He's ranting and justifying murder in his head. Throw the book at him.
