The Corral was crazy. Kind of like an NHL game in a community rink with a barnyard smell and some extra seats. Randy Holt getting in a fight and you could reach over the glass to help him out!
Now that I'm admitting I'm an old codger... I saw hundreds of games in the Saddledome before anyone ever thought of putting the nets up. I don't remember anyone getting seriously hurt, and our seats were in the end that Al Macinnis was shooting at twice a game.
I ain't got nothin' against the nets and I don't even notice them now, but it's not like before they were there, people were dropping like flies.

but back then people 'watched' the games and weren't 'busy' looking at their phones

If you can actually track a 90+MPH deflected slapshot heading towards you well enough to dodge it, you're more likely in the game being paid, not paying to watch it.

That we used to own sling shots and bb guns as kids and shoot dangerous projectiles at each other.

I used to go skiing with my school in Junior High and we weren't made to wear helmets.
Now that I'm a teacher and I've filled out forms and done the paperwork to go on field trips, I actually can't believe we were even allowed to ski in the first place.

Maybe mentioned already, but smoking on city buses and airplanes. I remember being on a bus and getting poked in the arm with a lit cigarette.

And smoking in offices.
My dad worked in a pretty blue collar environment and every office reeked of smoke with ash trays everywhere. Basically everyone was a chain smoker.
Gross.

My mom worked in the Petrocan building downtown and could smoke at her desk. In the ~early 90s they decided to ban indoor smoking. She was pissed.

You can still get similar things, don't think they're called Krazy Karpets anymore but my kids have them.

Neckguards and visors in the NHL is kind of a wierd topic in general.
Wearing a neckguard now is basically akin to wearing a thin turtle-neck. All players have Under Armour on anyways, just put a neck guard in. Anyone who claims it would hinder them in any way shape or form is lying.
Players not wearing visors are idiots. Pure and simple. There is a hard rubber disk flying around at 100 mph. People with blades on their feet. Every player carries a carbon-fibre spear. And each opponent is allowed to willfully run you over if you have possession of the disk. The s*** is dangerous.
The whole NHL helmet/face situation is a joke. It's astonishing they haven't gone to something similar to lacrosse or even football. Neither of those sports has the same potential for eye/face injuries. All this evffort into helmet design and nothing holding it in place on the chin but a measely strap that hasn't changed in 100 years. Nothing protecting the face, and at best, a half shield that can protect your eyes from anything coming straight at your face. Any angle and you're still boned. I'm sure Oakley or someone can put together a decent full face shield that doesn't fog and give full view.
The "old guard" played that way because that's what was available. As new things became available, the pro players adapted (goalie masks, helmets, composite sticks, revolutions in pretty much every other area of equipment), but for some reason when it came to the most vital and most vulnerable areas (head and neck) the NHL decided NOPE! Too cool to protect my brain and vision, guys. Can't you see how tough I am? Anyone who thinks it's something pansy needs to check their own masculinity.

When did they ban smoking in movie theaters?
I remember sitting in the back of the theater and smoking while watching Batman in '89, had to be well after people stopped but I wanted to be a badass I guess.

The myth of the 100 mph slap shot lives on in this thread - guys can't shoot it 100 mph in the all star game under perfect conditions.....
I miss metal tipped lawn darts, and furniture that is not anchored to the wall

When I started driving in 1979 we weren't required to buckle up our seatbelts when driving.
We also didn't have winter tires and relied on our all seasons to navigate snowy ice filled streets.
