A 30 point, 15 goal player is not a bust, however you want to cut it. If he stays that way he's very servicable.

I would guess that you are the only poster here who expects Bennett to top-out at 15 goals and 30 points.

Make or break year for a kid that just turned 21 this month? Give me a break. This team had the patience to see Jankowski (a few months shy of two years older than Bennett) through so I don't see them doing anything drastic with Bennett. Is Jankowski's first NHL season going to be make or break? It should be according to some of the fan expectations on Bennett.

Ference did his own contract negotiations, I'm sure there are a few others. Not very common though I'm sure.

and then IIRC, he was pissed because he gave a hometown discount and then was traded away to Boston the next year.

Well, I guess if you take exception to the use of the term "make or break", we can say this is a very important off-season and season for Bennett and if he has another 30 point season, we might want to temper our expectations.
I do think that if his offense doesn't pan out, he can be an effective bottom 6 agitator, if he cuts down on the retaliatory penalties. His 2-way play looked good down the stretch.
Mostly, I'm hopeful Bennett will take a jump.
Jankowski's situation is much different because he is expected to be a bottom 6 player and he has only played 1 NHL game. Expectations are much lower, although I would be disappointed if he doesn't make the NHL this year.

The question on Jankowski I think is rhetorical, but yeah, probably. Dude is older than Monahan and if he doesn't make the NHL now, he's looking at career 13th forward at best.
If it were up to me we'd sell high

Wideman was making nearly just as much. Markov is still decent considering his age. They will prob lock him up for 2 years @ 4 mil, putting him right up to age 40.

There was a rumour posted at HF that Markov was also talking to the Oilers. I sure hope that is true.

Jankowski also spent 4 years in University and a year in the AHL. I would think Sam would have benefited from at least a year in the A as well.

That's pretty evident now. Bennett's first two seasons don't exactly scream 'too good for the AHL.'

I agree. Plus, Engelland also defended his team mates. Emelin does everything he can to not fight. Even after borderline hits.
Not saying a player has to fight after a hit, just that Emelin is not engelland or what he provided.

Nothing about Jankowski is looking like a career 13th forward at best. In fact he's looking like he's on track to be a top two centre.
Stupid comment

The guy is a skilled center. He needs to play with skilled wingers.
You can't saddle him with players like Chaisson, Brouwer, Bouma, Versteeg and then chastise him for not producing.
Give him some skill and let him run with it.
|
And this is just it. Not only is he straddled to offensive anchors, but GG is reluctant to give him any PP time which is usually a huge confidence builder for young players. See the puck go in the net a few times, hear your name roared over the PA and it usually leads to playing with more poise. The opposite happened with Bennett. He came out of the gate flying trying to make an impact anyway he could, and it led to him taking some poor o-zone penalties which then avalanched into him getting benched. It took Sam until the playoffs to get back to flying the way he did in his rookie year and I honestly believe it was because he was terrified of getting benched again.
I saw another post about how Bennett's p/60 falls when playing with Gaudreau, but if we think about, have they ever gotten
the chance to develop chemistry? He gets sparse moments here and there, but I don't think he's ever gotten to play with Johnny more than a game or two in a row. When Monahan and Johnny are struggling we let them play through it, when Bennett is struggling he gets benched or demoted immediately. I'm hoping he can have his breakout season next year to finally shut everyone up, but if that doesn't happen I would be in favor of dealing him. And not because I'm not a believer in Sam Bennett (because he's my favorite player on the team), but just for the sake of the kids development. I'd rather see him go and thrive somewhere else where he can get the opportunity to realize his potential, which he won't do playing with a revolving door of 4th liners with minimal powerplay opportunity.
