IMO, of course, but if Uber loses in the US, they probably fold up shop. I don't see them gutting it out in smaller markets/countries. Where your argument comes in to play is on whether a new company were to take up the mantle in the same sharing economy space.

Apparently people who agreed to pay surge pricing and acknowledged the price beforehand are now trying to sue Uber in Quebec. Nothing but self-entitled morons.

Toronto cab drivers scamming riders, swiping their bank cards and emptying their accounts

This will help their image with the public in regards to Uber I'm sure

Uber continues the war on Uber driver earnings by cutting rates across a large number of markets, the most hilarious being in Detroit which went from 75c/mile to 30c/mile. At that rate, Detroit Uber driver are essentially paying their passengers to drive them and the IRS could probably disallow business deductions for the driver since it's obvious that their venture has no hope of ever turning a profit.

Bigger question is why does anyone drive for Uber? They treat their drivers like crap.

Logically, if the courts in Quebec were to hold that Uber is a taxi company, then it would stand to reason that Uber would be subject to taxi laws. Among them, the restrictions on what they can charge. If a person agrees to a contract that is illegal, it is not enforceable. That is just a guess on the basis of this, however. Do you have a link? I'd be interested to read more about that.

Don't get too excited about the new bylaws the city is crafting:
https://www.metronews.ca/news/calgar...i-bylaws-.html
Quote:
"City Staff’s recommendations to regulate ridesharing are unworkable as the proposed rules essentially treat ridesharing as a limousine product," wrote Uber spokesperson Jean-Christophe De Le Rue. "Moreover, Calgarians looking to earn some extra income for their families would have to pay almost $500 in fees and administrative costs in order to partner with a ridesharing company."

Is anyone seriously surprised by this?
I'll hold off on my final review until I see the actual by-law, but I have no faith in the city doing this properly (even with dozens (hundreds?) of other cities happily working with Uber that we could use as a template)
The City of Calgary is doing what it needs to do to protect its monopoly on public transportation. There is not even a glimmer of public interest being served in this.

Oh yeah, well, eventually the supply of drivers will run out. You don't make very much money.

Is there anyway we can read the real text of the proposed bylaw.

Further, a letter from Associated Cab Ltd. president Roger Richard submitted to TLAC, who at the last meeting in December was for recommendations, has changed his tune.
"Today we strongly oppose this direction and option as the original direction of Option #3 has changed," wrote Richard. "We feel that accepting this framework would be the total destruction of the Taxi and Limousine industry as we know it."

If taxi's and uber both hate it, then it's probably a solid deal.

If Uber doesn't like it, then I guess that's too bad for Uber. I'm sure someone else could build an App that would work under those parameters.

Yeah, if Uber takes issue with even these minute regulatory obligations, then they must have the thinnest of margins.

Is there an ETA on when we can expect Uber to start running again in Calgary?

Looks similar to what New York did. I bet we see uber here
The only issue now is that the province needs to permit a per km basis insurance to cover the gap when the ap is on but no fares are in the vehicle.
Good work by the city. It took 3 years too long to do and is essentially what everyone in this thread was looking for
