Used Car help
Hey guys,
My girlfriends 15 year old Corolla tanked on the weekend so she needs a new used car.
We want a car that has less than 100,000km, costs less than $10,000, 2010 model or newer and something that is very reliable and hatchback if possible. Need to buy from a lot because she needs to finance it.
She found a 2013 Kia Forte 5 hatch that she really likes, details here.
We drove it last night, seems very nice but I have a problem with the Car Proof report. It shows $1,800 collision damage and then the car was branded as “Salvage”. The car salesman couldn’t explain this to me, I just couldn’t understand how $1,800 of damage could get the car written off as salvage when typically this happens when the damage is more than half the value as I understand it. $1,800 is a new bumper and not really a big deal. Also has incorrect Odo listed at one point, looks like someone fixed it (insurance company?) and it hasn’t been driven since. Opinions on this?
Car Proof:
Do you guys have other recommendations for vehicles to be looking at in this range? I’ve seen quite a few Ford Fiestas and Chevy Sparks as well. My concern with them is their reliability mainly. I don’t think I would touch the Chev with a 10 ft pole, but the Fiesta I’m not sure about? Also, lots of Hundai’s and Nissans in at this range. Are there any concerns to know about these brands within the past five years?
Is it a good idea to take any vehicle she buys for a third party inspection even though it will be relatively new? I could probably get the dealer to pay for this, right?
Pylon, you have anything in this range on your lot?
Thanks for the help!

Just get a Honda Civic and be done with it. Super reliable, cheap on gas etc. Lots to be had on kijiji within your range and just stay away from the stealerships.

The problem is financing. If she buys through Kijiji, she would have to get a line of credit through her bank but they quoted 6.5-7% which seems quite high to me. I was thinking a dealer might be able to get a lower rate.

Maybe a lower rate, but a higher price.
Get a car loan and pay it off faster than expected.

Run fast and far away from that Kia find a car without a sketchy history. Also use Carproof instead of Carfax.

Agreed, those KM readings don't even make sense (unless I am reading it wrong which is highly possible).
If you have to ask too many questions to justify your purchase of that vehicle you should run away from the vehicle.

Don't buy salvage titled vehicles unless you fancy yourself a backyard mechanic.

I would guess with that CarProof the $1800 damage wasn't the same incident that caused the car to be written off. Personally, I wouldn't ever touch a car that was written off.

Get a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) from a proper dealership. All the manufacturers do it, and they come with warranties, and you save a bundle on the residual. Basically a car a year or, 5 years old, sold by the same manufacturer. Often are lease returns, trade-ins etc;
EDIT: RUN, not walk, RUN AWAY from that Kia. Also smart of you to do that Carproof. Many don't and get burned.

You're spoiled for choice in that segment really, don't settle for a car it it doesn't feel right. But for sub 10 000 you're not going to see much at the name brand dealers, just those smaller independent ones. So for that reason you may not be able to best a banks interest rate anyway.

Thanks everyone, will look elsewhere. It was my thought as well. We should be able to find something that has a spotless history.
If people have other suggestions or links i'd welcome them. Maybe CP wants to vote on which car we should buy. I'll outfit it with flames flags and a CP logo.

Talk to Pylon, there's a car that's pretty close to your price range is a 2012 and 80k kms in their used inventory, I think its a Jetta

Toyota or Honda in your price range is the safest choice, other makes tend to have their repair costs increase exponentially as they get older. Also when buying a used car there is no reason to settle for a salvage or car with previous damage unless you are looking for a rare/unique model.

Just a heads up if you buy a Honda around the 100,000km mark you will have a decent repair bill for the timing belt/water pump ~$1000. Make sure that was done or have them do it. They are virtually bullet proof otherwise and would be my first choice in that segment.

Only if you love rust. Rusty quarter pannels, rusty paint chips, rusty skirts, they should rename those cars the Mazda Rusty McRustface.

We bought a Yaris back in 2010 and it was a 2008, so it was less than 2 years old. Had decent millage on it though, about 50k, so we were able to get it for $10k exactly. Has been a great car with virtually no maintenance required, other than the standard fluid replacements (oil, transmission, etc.). We are around 150k or so now and still going strong.
I've found the best deals are the ones that are 2 or 3 years old. The worst of the depreciation loss has already worn off, but you are still getting something fairly new and you won't have to worry about maintenance like breaks, shocks, etc. for a year or two. I feel its the best 'bang for your buck' scenario, and if you go with a smaller sedan, you could easily grab one for under $10k.
