Ferland is an RFA with arbitration rights coming off his $825k salary.
He's due for a bump now after a strong year. Keep in mind Bouma got $2.2M after his 16G + 18A season, Ferland just registered 15G + 10A.

Ferland I see the Flames giving a bit of term to, probably around $1.5 for 3 years would be my guess.
They won't make the Bouma mistake again.

Maybe Bouma had a sense he was cashing in on an unsustainable year, and so wanted term in his contract.
Ferland might not feel the same way. I suspect his price tag is $2 million, but he might not be keen on signing on for that amount for more than 2 years.

Gaudreau(6.75) - Monahan(6.375)- Oshie(5.5×5)
Jankowski(.925)
- Backlund(3.575) - Frolik(4.3)
Tkachuk(.925) - Bennett(3×3) - Ferland(1.325)
Stajan(3.125) - Lazar(.895) - Hathaway(.700)/Chiasson(.900)
Hamilton(.612)
Gio(6.75) - Hamilton(5.5)
Brodie(4.650) - Stone(3.5x3)
Kulak(.656) - Andersson(.786)
Bartkowski(.612)
Bishop(6x4)
Rittich(.925)
=$69M
+ 1.05 (Raymond buyout)
=$70.05M
Even if I give Ferland and Stone a Bump I'm well under the cap. And if you can't get Oshie for 5.5x5 bring back Versteeg or go after a guy like Williams.
There's cap room to trade and retain salary on Bouma and or hide some of his salary in the minors. Worst case he's your 14th forward and you hide Hamilton's salary in the minors. Should still be room for bonus overages.

A lot depends on what the goaltending solution costs and who Vegas takes, and both are very hard things to predict. Since both are potentially such huge moving parts, I'll just make comment on how I see things.
- Regular forwards most easily replaced are Ferland and Chiasson. (Meaning: both are without a contract and neither was anything special in their roles. Doesn't mean I hate them, it's just an observation. Doesn't mean both will be gone, but I'll be a little surprised if both come back. (I don't count Hathaway or F. Hamilton as regulars.))
- With Ferland, Bennett and Versteeg looking for raises we'll need to find new cheap guys.
- Partly because of the above, Lazar and Jankowski are going to get every chance to make the lineup. Klimchuk is likely to get some looks too, since he's on the last year of his ELC.
- I would love Versteeg back, but I think it's very likely someone else offers more money and/or term. (There's a chance he might like his situation here though. PP time, good centers, likely a trip or two to the playoffs.)

Ferland isn't easily replaced. We had to pay Brouwer 4.5 million to be worse than Ferland as a similar type player. We have no Ferland type players in the system who are anywhere near ready to replace him.
Don't understand that thinking

Yep, no one is replacing Ferland for the contract he will most likely sign. Be worse than giving up Byron

Lot's of pople have Oshie in the lineup, if he is coming to Calgary(or Canada) he is going to cost between $6 million- $7 million range and on a long term contract, he has had a good season and is having a good post season.
Can Tkachuk play the RW or can Gaudreau play the RW? Anyone know? If the answer is yes to one of them, than try a top line of:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
or
Tkachuk - Monahan - Gaudreau
Jankowski - Backlund - Frolik
? - Bennett - Ferland
Bouma - Stajan - Hathaway
The ? can a prospect(there is talk of building within). And Jankowski gets to learn the ropes from some of the best(I don't know if Jankowski is better suited for center, if yes than try soomething else.) We have to get rid of Brouwer and Bouma.

Radulov- Re-signs with Montreal.
Alzner-Re-signs with the Caps(Shattenkirk is probably going to the Rangers.)
Bishop-Some teams will go after him but he signs in Philly(Philly trades one of their goalies away.)

This is the biggest question. If we have someone that can play RW, do that and don't sign a UFA. Shift the players up and play the young guys in the bottom 6.

Then have Jankowski play left wing with Backlund and Frolik, 3M line V2.0 if you will. Good way for a rookie to break into the NHL.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk

These lines might be good options. The Flames in some respects just were not good enough and we really need to have a solid 2 lines that can take it to the next level. Would hate to have another season go by without a solid top line fixture. Still too many holes throughout the line up and too many passengers on the team. Fix those and we could ramp it up!

I guess there isn't a roster spot for him (LW) but I wonder if Palat could be acquired for a relatively low return given Tampa's need for cap space and needing to decide between Palat, Johnson and Drouin?

I wonder if there is any chance Tre would go after Hanzal as a UFA.
Like a 6'6" 230lb Backlund who is good at face offs. Familiarity with Tre and Maloney as well. Push a couple young centers to the wing for a year or two and have added depth for injury.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
S Bennett - Backlund - Frolik
Jankowski - M Hanzal - Brouwer
M Ferland - C Lazar - Chiasson

"Easiest to replace" isn't so much a commentary on their skill, mostly just a comment on their contract situation.
Upgrading Brouwer is much harder than upgrading Ferland because we can't get rid of Brouwer. It's not really a comment on their skill level beyond the obvious fact that better (or possibly different in some useful way) players exist.

One of the last players we should consider trading on this team is Ferland. Players like Ferland are almost irreplaceable. The last 20 games of the season we finally used Ferland properly. 30 other teams would love to take Ferland on their team.

Flames have lacked a good face guy since Conroy. Hanzal would be nice, great on faceoffs and actually is a pretty tough player, doesn't fight often but holds his own when he does.
I'd probably have the lines like this:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Jankowski - M Hanzal - Brouwer
Bennett/Lazar - Lazar/Bennett - Hathaway
That is a pretty big lineup when you add Jankowski, Hanzal and Hathaway.
First two lines are obvious, but that's an interesting bottom 6. A big "checking line" with some skill and a buzzsaw line with some offensive upside too.
