Nenshi's Win Heard Around the World
The only way a McIver victory would have garnered international coverage is if he snapped and started sniping people from the Calgary Tower whilst wearing lingerie and a ball gag.
"Calgary’s not alone in buzzing over a Muslim mayor swept to power on a surge of digital social media.
Headlines and articles from across Canada and the world have picked up on the unlikely story of upstart candidate Naheed Nenshi...."

So, it is news to everyone in the world because he is Muslim. I personally think it is a minor note, worth mentioning, but not the headline.
No one seems to mention that one month ago he had 8% support and two months ago he had 1% support. Now that is newsworthy. That is the type of come from behind victory that movies are made of.

I'm actually very glad that Nenshi's religion was mostly a non-factor in the campaign. I don't care if he's Muslim or Christian or Hindu or Jewish or an atheist, so long as his platform is one that I mostly agree with.

I don't give a flying Fug if Nenshi worships Zeus, Jebus or Pope John Paul the 2nd. As long as he makes positive changes for the city I will support him. I hope this really shakes up city hall.

I'm so glad that the rest of the world is so proud of little Calgary ... when in reality no one here cared what his religion was. Which is exactly the way it should be.
So many of these articles are so patronizing and written by people who have obviously spent little to no time in this city.

I agree, but for the rest of the world thinks the Muslim headline will sell more papers.

Well, it probably sells more papers in the US. They seem to think that Muslim equates evil. Yes, that is a gross generalization, but seeing haters of Obama equate him to a Muslim in attempt to discredit him seems to point to this.

One of the best parts of this election is that it never became about Gender, Race, or Religion. It really didn't even get partisan right vs. left. This was the first election I have witnessed that was about issues and vision for the future.
Only hawkesworth went negative and he was for the most part ignored.
It does a dis-service to this calgary to say that a Muslim was elected and how pro-gressive we are. It misses the whole point that it was never even discussed.

Be thankful that Nenshi didn't become mayor while George Bush was President of the U.S. and A. If today the year was 2009 we could expect him to order an invasion of Alberta to protect American interests by the end of the week.

Peter Mansbridge was at the Business Hall of Fame dinner in Calgary tonight and had some great things to say about Nenshi (who even made an appearance).
Said we are lucky to have him as our mayor, and wished the City all the best.

No. They have oil. And therefore weapons of mass destruction.

Exactly. I didn't hear it mentioned by the campaign itself at all. The information was there, but that's it. Ric on the other hand when asked what he did Monday morning listed off things, including that he had went to church. I realize he's simply answering a question, but I'm an advocate of 100% separating church and state. If there's a Christian voter that's unsure, that can swing them if they're not ones to research.

Hopefully this will begin to shake the redneck stereotype Calgary gets.
