That is fantastic. Hope it goes well

I do have a great deal of respect for Michael and truly hope he can recover fully and enjoy his retirement.

On a side note, Could not agree more about the loss of Greg Moore, I'll never forget that Halloween Sunday afternoon watching it all happen live. No disrespect intended, Greg was not moving to F1, he signed a contract to drive for Penske Racing in 2000 CART season.

Only a miracle can save him now.

Quote:
"Sources close to his family say the 45-year-old driver's wife Corinna and his brother, Ralf Schumacher, have been consulting brain specialists throughout Europe and have been told that his chances of recovery are minimal.

The family is said to be concerned that the French doctors treating Schumacher have little hope that he will recover and now assume that he will remain in a vegetative state for the rest of his life".

I'm not sure there is a difference for him in being dead or not dead. Definitely hard on the family to drag on forever though. What an unceremonious way to go for such a celebrated sports hero though. No one can really mourn him, or celebrate his career or anything, while there is still a little bit of hope. But it could be years before he actually dies.

Is that 100% for sure? I'm pretty ignorant on the subject.

I ran across this on James Allen's website, posted on March 7. Take it for what it's worth, but Allen is a respected F1 journalist who has written two books about Schumacher.

Quote:
Although Michael Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm issued a statement on Friday saying simply that “Michael is still in the wake-up phrase. The situation has not changed,” the Gazzetta dello Sport’s Pino Allievi has written that the German is now breathing by himself without a respirator and doctors believe that he is hearing the voices of his friends, among them FIA president Jean Todt and Ross Brawn. Todt is apparently speaking to his friend in English, as he did in their successful Ferrari days.

Schumacher remains in a coma nine weeks after the skiing accident which gave him a severe head injury requiring two operations to open his skull to relieve the pressure of his brain swelling.

There has been little news for three weeks, since it was announced that doctors in the hospital in Grenoble to which he was taken on December 30th, were trying to wake him.

Kehm has kept a tight lid on information and has said on several occasions, “Any medical information published which is not confirmed by the team of doctors treating Michael or his management has to be considered as not valid.”

But, while respecting this and being cautious, this intervention in Italy is worth noting.

But today, Allievi, Italy’s most influential and best connected F1 journalist has written some details of Schumacher’s treatment and condition, the main one being that he is breathing unaided.

Todt and Brawn have stayed very close to the situation and to the family. Todt in particular is in constant contact even when not at the hospital. His close friend Prof Gerard Saillant is overseeing the care of the seven times world champion and reports to him several times a day. This I know from personal experience having visited Todt for an interview for the Financial Times last week. He also told me that “You will write another book on Michael. And I will write the Foreword,” referring to the 1997 and 2007 books I wrote about Schumacher.

Allievi does not reveal the source of his information in the article, but it is sound, and has details of movements Schumacher has made; occasional twitches of an arm, a hand, a finger. His wife Corinna is by his side constantly. Brawn apparently plays recordings of pit to car radio from their times racing together, “because Michael needs to string together the threads of his life, voices and sounds.”

None of this means that he will recover. No-one knows when- or even if – Schumacher will wake up. And if he does whether he will have any quality of life at all.

But all those around him are doing everything they can and above all are continuing to hope.

Ran across this this morning.

Quote:
Michael Schumacher's agent has said he is "showing small signs of progress" as he continues his recovery from brain injuries suffered in a skiing accident.

Sabine Kehm issued a statement on April 4 stating that Schumacher was showing "moments of consciousness and awakening", which had been the first news from his family in over a month. Speaking on German TV station ARB on Sunday evening, Kehm elaborated further and insisted the family have "great courage" from the signs Schumacher is showing.

"There are short moments of consciousness and he is showing small signs of progress," Kehm said. "There are moments when he is awake and moments when he is conscious, which make us happy and give us great courage.

"Of course I am not a doctor, but medically, there is a distinction between being awake and being conscious, the latter meaning there is an ability to interact with his surroundings. I don't want to disclose details out of respect for the family, but we have no doubt at all in the abilities of the doctors treating Michael, they are experts in their field."

Kehm also said interaction with Schumacher is "on a very limited basis" and that his brain injury means "a medical prognosis is not possible".

During the interview Kehm also once again reiterated her desire for media to be sensitive in its handling of Schumacher's injury.

"What upsets the family most is media quoting doctors who are not treating Michael and untruths are constructed from these," said Kehm, who has been in Grenoble nearly every day since the accident. "It has been a problem when outsiders comment and it means we have to set the record straight, even when we don't want to."

Starting to look like another Chi Cheng (bassist for the Deftones) situation. Basically he was in a car accident, spent the last 4 years of his life in a semi-comatose state.

bump. According to reports in Germany, Schumacher has now left the hospital and will continue his rehabilitation at home. "Has made progress" according to his agent, but still "has a long and hard road ahead of him".

I would assume we are talking special care and treatment for the rest of his life.

Sad, but not suprising at all. Hard hat manufacturers go as far to warn not to put stickers on, out of the potential for glue/chemicals to weaken the hard hat.
