The Flames need two more players: Toews and Kipper (circa 2004-2008)

Toews as a leader and jack of all trade first line centerman, and prime-era Kipper to steal games where necessary

Otherwise, the current wing depth and defense is good enough to win a cup.

Flames currently don't have a single player in the top 50 scoring-wise fyi.

Flames need to fill these to have a comfortable and entertaining playoff experience (as oppose to 4 and out):
- #1 C. Preferably in the Toews type of mould - a two-way forward with leadership that shows up on ice.
- #1 scoring threat (either wing). Iginla can't be expected to lead the team and Cammalleri doesn't look like he's returning to that.
- Dependent on how Tanguay/Iginla rebounds, another #1 offensive threat.
- #2 D. Preferably one that contrasts with Bouwmester's game play and would give a point threat as well. A Shea Weber style of player who will play corners well, makes a threat of himself offensively, and hits hard. This leaves the Flames with a 2nd pairing problem (Giodano, Wideman, Brodie), but I'll be happy to accept that issue if it ever comes up.
- In a year or two, a #1 goaltender. At this point, just anybody you could be fine with playing 55+ games...doesn't even need to be a workhorse goalie.

In other words...the team needs a lot of help on things you can't really pick up on UFA. It'll be a while before I think they see the playoffs again (fingers crossed that it happens though)

The Flames do have two players in the top 50 points per game wise.

Tanguay rebound?
He has 9 points in 10 games. He's arguably our best forward.

Thought Tanguay was 57th PPGwise?

My bad. Copied an old comment from when Tanguay was struggling and adjust it.

2 players are missing.

A number one center and a top notch top six forward.

D is solid under this coaching staff and Goaltending....well.....thats a crap shoot right now.

If you were to immediately change the team into a good hockey team by next year? First is losing 3 guys in Bouwmeester, Iginla and Kipper.

Tanguay ??????? ???????
Cervenka Cammy Hudler
Glencross Backlund Stempniak

Giordano ??????????
Wideman Brodie

??????????

Mess with the middle 6 forwards however you want, the top 9 is missing a top line centre and a replacement for Iginla. That's two players, probably $12 million in salary. Top 4 D is missing a true, bona fide #1 guy who would replace Bouwmeester, probably at $6 or so. Goaltending is missing a high-end starting goaltender to replace Kiprusoff so as not to regress overmuch at that position; say another $6.

So my answer is 4 players, $24 million in salary. It's a lot to ask.

How many players away?

Well, we just nabbed MacDonald, and are apparently kicking tires on Arnott.

Getting closer and closer my friends.

But you don't get to 'keep the team, plus Getzlaf', you get to draft a good looking center or trade something for a decent prospect, you then get to wait a few years to see if they work out by which time Kipper is gone as well as Iggy.

Assuming you do try and pick up a mature first line player he will have issues, that's why he's available, or be an older, expensive rental that costs you a draft pick or two.

After Capgeeking a bit, if the Flames were to unload Iggy, Kipper and Bouwmeester this year - which in my view they absolutely should do at the deadline or before - they will have 14 guys on the roster next year and $27,473,333 in cap space. Round it to 27.5.

Assume that Cervenka or a usable replacement in the top 6 costs $3M. That gets us down to 24.5M. Say $800k on the backup tendy, another 700k on a depth forward and we're at $23M. Backlund and Brodie are getting raises coming off their ELC's - let's say that they cost $5M combined. Sign a bottom pairing d for $1M.

I don't think any of those prices are unreasonable - they're as likely to be optimistic as pessimistic. The count sits at $17M left and are missing a #1 defenseman, a #1C, a first line RW, and a starting goalie. Good luck doing that for $4.25aav on average. Here's the team:

Tanguay ??????? ???????
($3M Guy) Cammy Hudler
Glencross Backlund Stempniak
($700k Guy) Jones Baertschi
Jackman

?????? Giordano
Brodie Wideman
Smith ($1M Guy)
Sarich

?????????????
($800k Guy)

This pretty much sums it up.

It's pretty obvious but the holes are the ones that are the hardest to fill.

I don't think this team is a few players away from the Cup. The problems is our best players aren't worth their contracts. If you could half Iggy's salary and add a great top flight winger to play alongside a bonafied star centre, maybe add a dominant D man and a couple depth d men...

I mean we`re talking a totally different team here.

It's a fun exercise filling them though.

Here's an interesting rosterbation idea. Let's forget Cervenka, let him walk. Now you've got $20M. Put Glencross on the 2nd line in place of him, and instead sign a $2M guy for the bottom 6 - say Pascal Dupuis or someone. Sign Perry and Getzlaf for $7M apiece. Spend $2M on a mediocre goalie - Nabokov maybe. Spend ~$1.5M on another bottom pairing D and run with a 2nd pairing of Smith / Brodie. Team would live and die with the goalie's play, but hey, could be fun to watch at least.

THe top line is toast going into the future. and seemingly in the present as well. Iginla has really seemed to take a step back this year. I know he always starts slow, but that usually was just him being snake bitten until they started going in. But This year looks different, its like he has forgotten how to rip the puck. In the last couple games he has had some pretty looks at the net, maybe not a 1-timer in the slot, but time with the puck in the circles. These are the kind of chances that a Jamie Benn, Parise, Staal, all bury, and Jarome seems burdened with even getting a good shot off in these situations. It doesnt look like he is an elite sniper anymore, and until we find someone to fill his shoes, as well as the other positions discussed above, we are going nowhere fast.

but hey, here's hoping he picks it up in the next ten.
