So is BF1 any good?

Should I buy it?

Yes it's very good. It plays like a modernized version of BF1942.

Pros
- Map design
- Sound design
- AAA Graphics
- No Battlelog Browser
- Classes feel balanced
- Tanks are back to BF1942 levels of powerful but not OP
- Fun
- "Living World" map mutation (weather, destructible buildings, deformable terrain)

Meh
- Only 9 maps at launch
- Weapons need tweaking; specifically rifles
- Pub servers are still sniperriffic on some maps
- Flying is still dominated by guys with HOTAS setups

Cons
- AAA price ($60 on GMG tho)
- DLCs not released til March
- Hacking is a thing already
- Incompatibilities/instability with certain hardware configs
- Pub scrubs torture you by having 40% of your team as medics, and the game showing you how far away they are from you when you die, and not having any of them revive you, like, ever

It's a pretty great game. I'm terrible but its still so much fun

I have a 70% win percentage so I like to think I at least contribute. My goal is always to keep everyone else alive until I get better with kb&m

In past Battlefield games the default infantry guns were always serviceable, sometimes among the best in the games. Battlefield 1 this is likely the case as well. What I really like so far in Battlefield 1 is that each of the classes has the kit unlocks from the start as well. So for example you can play an Assault class with some anti-tank weapons from the get-go. No need to grind away playing as a neutered class before you unlock upgrades which makes you finally useful.

That old style of progression was especially annoying in vehicles. Want to upgrade your vehicle kit? Better play a lot in vehicles and get lots of kills...against enemies that are way more upgraded than you. Good luck!

Again, in Battlefield 1, you aren't at a disadvantage the first time you step into a tank. I haven't (and probably won't) play the air vehicles, but it looks like the default package is decent, and the upgraded alternatives you have to unlock are just for different play styles, so more appropriately 'sidegrades'.

As usual in Battlefield, the most satisfying kills are when you blow air-vehicles out of the sky (even if you get a little lucky):

I've seen a lot of videos where people are headshotting pilots from the back of moving horses and vehicles or from 10 miles away.

I'm guessing that the atmosphere really doesn't exist and that there's next to no bullet drop.

Most of those were done in the open beta. You hardly see any of that in game. There is bullet drop and depending on muzzle speed a lot of adjustments to be made while firing.

I turned the game in for a refund as I didn't want to miss the window. Right now because of my card, the game is literally unplayable. I'll probably buy it again if they fix the issues.

Sounds like my experience with BF1942. Couldn't play it until the 1.3 patch (nearly 6 months after launch) because it hated my Ti4200.

I've been out of the loop on new games and equipment for a while. Can you guys give me an idea on how the game will run on my system and what would be the best upgrade should I need it.

Intel i5 2500k 3.3 GHz
Radeon 6970 HD 2GB
16 GB dual channel ram

Mediocre at best, Low (with lag) at worst.

Videocard, and depending on what PSU you have, PSU.

Ha, nice. The funny thing is that for the most part the airplanes aren't really that much of a nuisance in BF1. So hitting up the AA is sort of petty. I think it is pent-up frustration from all the Battlefield 4 ace helicopter pilots that are impossible to take down, even with two or three squad mates shooting heat seeking missiles at them.

In BF1, a single guy on one of these AA guns can take down (or otherwise render ineffective) a plane, and it is glorious.

But the real question here is what is the potential for the hilarious "only in BF" moments?

I would almost expect that's by design. Aircraft weren't a huge part of WW1 compared to the other wars.

Inaccurate bombs, slow, frail, lots of mechanical failures.

I was always partially in awe and partially frustrated in the other battlefield games because and especially in Vietnam and good pilot in a F4 or in a helicopter gunship would completely tip and map.

Guess my 6 year old desktop is showing its age. Only one map doesn't lag.

I'll play on ps4 until I upgrade my PC I guess

That happens in every game. Newbies get slaughtered by people that have played a ton of multiplayer and know every good nook and cranny and gun spot, can shoot like davey Crickett, drive a tank like Mario Andretti or fly a plane like Maverick Mitchell.

I've always thought that playing multiplayer is a time investment, because when you first enter they should have a booming voice cry out. Newbie over here, prepare for operation million reams in a row.

Supposedly BF1 is/will be using some form of ELO matching (and purports to when logging you in) but with a manual server browser as an option I don't see how that would work terribly well.
