Default Hawaiian Pizza Inventor Sam Panopoulos has passed away age 83

Very sad news coming out recently that Greek-Canadian Sam Panopoulos, the inventor of the Hawaiian pizza, has passed away at age 83. The dish was created at the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario in 1962 by experimentily combing savoury ham with sweet pineapple.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40230407

His legacy will be controversial. For Hawaiian pizza lovers like myself he will be considered a brilliant outside the box thinker whose creativity is responsible for one of Canada's greatest food contributions to the world. For others who consider pineapple on pizza to be blasphemous he will be considered a dangerous food rebel who should have never stepped foot in a kitchen.

I'm going to make a home made Hawaiian Pizza tonight with lots of pineapples, ham, cheese and hot sauce.

I read this article on CBC today and when I read his background, he's from my mothers village in Greece!! Turns out my family and their family are/were very close. Nobody knew anything about him being the "inventor of Hawaiian pizza" just that he was in the restaurant business.

Small world I tell you!

There are really no rules on what belongs on a pizza as long is it works with the other toppings.

Pineapples work.

Hawaiian pizza is awesome.

Yep, pretty much anything goes on a pizza. Unless of course you are talking about real Neopolitan pizza which must only include Campana Buffalo Mozzarella and San Marzano tomatoes grown on the plain south of Mount Vesuvius.

Edit: is there any chance the mods could change Pizza's avatar to a Hawaiian?

Best Pizza I ever had: Austin Texas a Detroit style pizza with pepperoni, full pineapple rings and jalapeņo with spicy sauce.

Pineapple works.

Obviously, it was a joke. Should've passed it in front of the CP Sensitivity Committee first I suppose.

But Hawaiian is a cursed affront to all thing a good about pizza. A dubious legacy for this fellow.

In today's age of hipster pizzas featuring toppings like avocado, pulled pork, and kim chi, someone would have eventually put pineapple on a pizza. Sam was a pizza visionary 50 years ahead of his time.

I love adding jalapenos and even occasionally hot pepperoni to a Hawaiian. Sweet, savoury, and spicy, yum yum!

I don't like raw jalapeņo on them as the flavour becomes overpowering what you want is a slow burning heat
