What are the chances of two incidences happening at the exact spot in a matter of hours?

Evidently not as bad as we would have anticipated.

Doesn't sound like trains are going in any direction from downtown ATM.

It's okay everyone. I'm alright. Nothing major. Just minor injuries.
Hopefully my insurance won't go up.
Not going to text and drive again that's for sure.

What an awesome day. Got stuck getting to school in the morning due to the accident, and now I'm stuck getting home from a second accident. Maybe they need to introduce some new safety features to the train crossings to prevent these people hell bent on trying to off themselves Darwin style from being able to get in front of the train.

Guys, once again I really think there was a problem with the signals.

To be honest with how aggressive a lot of people drive in this city I'm surprised these things don't happen more often. Still twice in the same spot on the same day is just bizarre.

What's it look like right now Ken? Twitter is saying there is one train line getting through. Has the van been moved?

Just put old school cow catchers on the front of the trains. Push the wreckage aside and carry on so the city doesn't grind to a halt because of one, or today, two idiots.
I just can't fathom how this happens. Obviously people run "regular" red lights all of the time due to inattention, which is bad enough. But throw in some lights and bells and there really is no excuse. You could put up crossing arms, but people would find a way to screw that up too.
Edit: But, of course, I'll retract my idiot accusation of the second driver if the signals were in fact not functioning. Only partially though. Wouldn't the light have been red anyway?

According to my train driver, the trains are sharing one track, alternating between northbound and southbound trains.

Nah, it was probably SARS, and Jon Lord could have been the Saviour of us all if he'd been elected, and would have stopped this, and saved traffic!

So my train just got through. Took about 40 minutes. I would imagine this is pretty much stopping any nw south train traffic, as the trains are taking turns getting through on the northbound track.

There's enough room for a line to get through NB. The van is on the tow truck and being pulled away as I type.
(And just saw a NB train go by.)

This. A few months ago the bells and lights at the 2nd ave crossing weren't working and I almost got hit by the bar lowering as I drove through the intersection. At the 4th ave intersection, without a safety bar, it would be an easy mistake to make if the bells and lights didn't go off. To make matters worse since the lights normally go green to ensure all the traffic that may be on tracks gets a chance to clear off it's probably easy to assume green means go without looking both ways?
Or it's just two idiots in the same day at the same location?

I've seen signal problems on the LRT tracks before (Green both ways on 7th ave and 8th st), so this is not out of the realm of possibility. However, I would have expected the driver in the first incident to complain about the signal giving him the green, and someone would then check the signal? Maybe I am being optimistic.

No, the lights go green when the flashing lights start. This is to ensure that anyone stuck on the tracks, or in front of the guy on the tracks, get's a green light to clear the intersection.

Crazy, busy day.
The one thing that gets me, even if the signals are or aren't working...don't people LOOK before coming up to train tracks? Trains are hard to miss, they aren't exactly quiet or small. One would think, as one approaches a set of train tracks, that one would LOOK up and down the tracks (much like crossing a road...) before they get there and discover 120,000lb of angry train...

I have seen some potentially catastrophic collisions almost come to fruition at that intersection over the last couple years.
