Default Jack Edwards Retiring

I'm sure non-Bruins fans are grateful.

Is he the one fighting a major illness?

From reddit: "He has a degenerative disease that is effecting(sic) his speech and he is also fighting prostate cancer."

I haven't seen any real confirmation of this, but I also haven't looked very hard. In what little searching I have done, though, I've gotten the sense that he's very private about his health (although his retirement statement did acknowledge that he's no longer able to keep up with the play).

It's time. His over the top homerism never bothered me, I thought it was funny. but lately he just forgets what he's talking about mid sentence. Clearly had something going on

Best of luck to him

This makes sense. Last week I thought "how has this guy been calling Bruins games for so long?" Knowing he has some health issues makes sense.

Yeah he's definitely having speech problems. When the Flames and Bruins played earlier this year someone pointed that out because he really struggled in that game. I've seen others where it was less noticeable, but he still seems a bit off. Can't imagine how frustrating it would be to want to say something but struggle to do it after being able to do so for like 65 years.

I think he said his speech problems came from Lyme disease. But yeah, it became very apparent this season he was done. Sure he was there cognitively, but his speech couldn't keep up with his brain or the game itself.

I’d rather Jack Michaels retired.

For Bruins fans who remember Edwards’s soliloquy on Patriots Day 2009 about “redcoats” and “ragtag farmers” after a Bruins win over the Canadiens, it may not come as that much of a surprise that his family has a tradition, started by Edwards’s late father, of reading aloud the Declaration of Independence on July 4.
Americans, man.

He was definitely over the top with his Bruins enthusiasm, but I will always remember him for his national work in the early days of ESPN2 hockey. All the best for him in his health battles.
