It was a sentimental evening when MJK and Goffie started talking about Martin Hanzal. For those that may not remember, Hanzal ripped up the CPHL during the preseason last year and expecations were high that he could do the same in the regular season. That was not the case and Hanzal was traded to the Penguins in a deal that saw Taylor Hall come back. Hall did rip up the CPHL and led the Sharks in scoring.
Fast forward to last night, the Sharks had the 16th overall pick and were keen to bring in a roster player who did not have a big hit on the salary cap. Hanzal seemed like a good fit but he alone wasn't enough to get the trade done. We have had many talks involving that 1st round pick and we think we made a deal that helps us now but also gives us an additional piece that could turn into something really good.
Michael Dal Colle is also heading to San Jose. Dal Colle is a favorite of GM Penney and we have watched his progress throughtout the years. We originally drafted him when I was the GM of the Sharks. While he hasn't taken the big leap that we thought he would, we think it is prime time that he does and expect him to get a solid shot to make the Islanders team this year after a season in the AHL.
Fun Fact: Hanzal and Dal Colle were both draft picks we made and look forward to seeing how they can continue their careers on the Sharks.
Thanks for the deal Goffie, we don't make many these days because you are so cheap but we found a way to get this done.
