Ooof.. that's got to hurt for Sportsnet. Spend billions of dollars to secure the NHL and they still can't compete with viewership at the trade deadline.

For the rankings, SportsBusiness Journal analyzed ratings data from 21 of the NHL’s 23 U.S.-based clubs; information on Carolina and Nashville was not available. Ratings also were not available for the league’s seven Canadian teams.

I was hoping with the playoff run and the level of excitement that the Flames bring out that the ratings would be a little higher. The numbers vs the BJ, Wild and Preds seem low. Even the game vs Edmonton on HNIC with playoff points on the line I thought would break the 1 million mark.

Hopefully the playoff ratings will be good.

Thanks for the info!!!

You're welcome. I think the playoffs ratings will be high for the Flames-Canucks series as well as the rest of the other series. I thought the Flames regional and national ratings would be higher too but, those were against less popular teams and the Oilers are cellar dwellers.

The main reason, all their games were on the CBC (except Mar. 21). They would also be playing the Habs or another canadian opponent a fair number of times. Look at Mar. 7, the Leafs game only had 743,000. "That might be the lowest HNiC 7 p.m. start number ever, or at least since digital tallying." Thank you Tsawwassen.

I've been largely disappointed by nearly all of the Rogers coverage during the playoffs when compared to the CBC / TSN split of previous years. I generally watch every game I can of the playoffs, at least 1 or 2 games every night. It dominates my spring evenings. It's been far less enjoyable for me this year than years past and I've attributed that mostly to how Rogers has covered them and how they've changed what we've seen in years past. Right from the panels and commentarors (some, not all) to thier branding, sponsors, and production value.

In general, from a high level, how would you say these ratings compare to the last 5 years? Is the average Canadian displeased like me, or has Rogers managed to harness more viewers than coverage of the past few years?

I'm actually enjoying the continuity of the coverage from one game to another. I disliked the fact that CBC and TSN had completely different productions.

Going to be very difficult to draw a conclusion on what you want to draw a conclusion on based on viewership ratings I think. Either way, whether they go up or down. Mostly I think that's because the teams involved and the match ups we get are the by far and away the biggest driver of ratings, so it's not really going to be about the changes to the coverage, but mostly about who's playing who, who's fan base is largest and how interesting are the match ups to the average hockey fan. Montreal went deep last year, huge hockey market for example.

Finally, Rogers has also made a very conscious decision to put some series (ours this round) on a non main stream channel (i.e. need the sports pack to get it). I know that was the case with TSN games last year as well, but into the second round, not sure we'd see a Canadian team not on CBC in previous years, so that will also impact viewership, but is definitely a conscious choice by Rogers to drive up subscriptions on their sports packages.

The other four series ratings from the first round will be up later today or tonight. It has been difficult finding the ratings for each game so far this entire season. Tsawwassen and I continue searching the internet for other sources.

The Zelkovich blog from Yahoo generally gives ratings from Friday to Sunday. Bill Brioux has been posting the ratings for only some playoff games. The numeris (BBM) ratings for the playoffs are a daily average of each timeslot for the CBC games.

That is correct about why the ratings fluctuate in Canada, canadian teams are the primary reason.

The Jets and Flames series being on Sportsnet (instead of the CBC) will not affect the ratings drastically. The channel is easily available as it is on basic digital cable which many canadians have. Some areas even have the channel as part of basic cable. I think Sportsnet is the second channel behind the CBC and City being the third channel when it comes to the regular season games.

The Great Canadian Ratings Report: NHL playoffs failed to produce big ratings for Rogers

https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/eh...ory&soc_trk=tw

The first year of Rogers 12-year, $5.2 billion dollar hockey gamble is in and the numbers are not pretty.

After a hot start in the playoffs, thanks to the presence of five Canadian-based teams, ratings took a nosedive in the latter rounds. According to Numeris research, total playoff ratings were down 20 per cent, thanks to a final that generated limited interest.

Ratings for the final were 12 per cent lower than last year and the lowest since 2009. Monday's deciding game between Tampa Bay and Chicago was also off 20 per cent from last season and was the least-watched Stanley Cup finale since the seventh game of the New Jersey-Anaheim series in 2003.

Audiences on CBC saw an 8 per cent drop while Sportsnet's hockey averages were 14 per cent below what TSN drew last year.

That's a rather shocking decrease considering that last year only one Canadian team made the playoffs.

I know I personally had no real interest in the teams in the final. As much as I wanted Chicago to lose, that didn't really encourage me to watch the final.

All of the early starts and nice weather might have more to do with that then the actual teams involved though.
