I don't take any of these lists seriously. Many feel the same I'm sure. So I'm sure no one really cares. No reason for it to be national news. It's a local news story.

Livability isn't tied to real estate prices, necessarily. If you give up the notion of home / condo ownership as being the end goal, you can do well in those places.

I wonder how many of these "best cities" things there actually are. Have to be at least a dozen outfits that do this sort of thing.

Isn't rent also insane in VAN and TOR?

You'd imagine. Somebody has to own it and the Property Tax and everything else is still insane.

The rent is sky high too - hour commutes whether by car or transit isn't quality of life

Too many to even take any semblance of notion from it. Means very little in the grand scheme of things. Each survey has different factors which could affect any cities standing. I'm not one for civic pride nor care about it. Hence no matter which city is picked makes no difference or me.

Again - these are done under the lens of executive relocation - So real estate prices aren't as important as they are for average folks. The bigger issue is relative overheating and potential for a big crash (which, while possible, isn't widely forecast for either Van or TO). So as such the "prohibitively expensive" real estate, be it in VAN , TO, or Sydney has a much lower impact than if this was a study done for the average Joe.

I took a good friend from Miami and his girlfriend from Brazil around town last week. First time in Canada for her. We did a bike tour from Kensington Hotel Arts down to Peace Bridge, Prince’s Island, East Village, Inglewood, Mission, 8th Ave at lunch, then to Simmons for lunch.
They loved the tour of Calgary. She commented on how it reminded her of Sweden. The cleanliness and friendliness of the people. How the style of the city was very modern, and felt safe everywhere. Then they went to the mountains and were blown away at how amazing the Rockies are.
It was a great feeling to hear this. I often drive to work and go home each day and I don’t take the time to appreciate all we have. The bike tour was awesome for me as it really got me thinking how clean, safe and amazing this city is.
I know in the winter this place can be dark and cold, but in the summer it is probably one of the best cities in the world to live.

For what it's worth, this list made national news in New Zealand due to Auckland falling out of the top ten.

Why is there only 140 cities ranked. What's the criteria to get ranked? It can't be a size threshold, since I don't think Calgary is in the top 300 in the world in size.

Why not? I'm pretty sure we are.

They don't rank Edmonton because E=NG
Actually, worse than no good; irrelevant.

Same, had my wife's friend over from Dallas for the long weekend. She's lived in Italy for 10 years, southern US / Atlanta / Dallas and gone all over the world. Went to Canmore, Calgary Tower, got some wings on Stephen Ave, gone to Mission. She absolutely loved Calgary, and she's been in Vancouver.
There's a lot going for Calgary, and it tends to be underrated a lot by Canadians because of the whole conservative / redneck stereotypes, so it always is fun to see their bubbles deflate a little that Toronto the center of the universe suddenly goes down.

Calgary is an incredibly lovable and liveable city. It’s without the prestige of other major cities, but is also modern, friendly, safe, clean, and fun.
It’s not too small. It’s not too big. The winters are tough, but the summers are beautiful. Everything is at your doorstep, aside from the ocean, and despite economic hardship it’s a city that’s evolving and getting better every day.
It’s not for everyone, but no city is.

One summer back in the 90s a friend and I ran a bike tour business out of the youth hostel. We'd start at hostel, head up the Elbow, over the dam, had lunch at Weaselhead, around the reservoir, down through Mount Royal, and back to the hostel. Took about 5 hours. For the rest of the day they could use the bikes on their own - we gave them maps.
Every person who took the tour loved it.
