Thanks for the link. I only caught part of the interview.

Sounds very positive about David Rittich.

Thanks for posting this. Pretty clear they wanted a bonafide #1. He didn't say it, but Elliott's inability to rebound from a poor showing was not something they were going to risk again. A true #1 shouldn't need multiple games to get his form back so here's hoping Smith can get it done.

Also said they weren't interested in another team's young goalie and the cost it would take to acquire one.

I was lukewarm on the acquisition when I first heard about it... but between the salary retained and thinking about the other options, I can live with it and take a wait and see approach.

It sounds from this interview like prices were very high for young goalies... and the idea of anyone else more than two years seems like a bad move.

For the cap hit / term, this could be a successful move.

I think he has some game left in him (I HATED seeing the Flames play him last year, he was frustrating standing on his head) and don't see his age as an issue with just two years left.

I felt really good going into last season and the opening month was a disaster. I have a feeling despite not being 100% sold on this option it will turn out better and above expectation.

Trust Tre's judgement. Excited to get behind this decision and hope it works out.

The thing I like is that if I were Gillies/Rittich/Parsons, I would be pretty stoked at that interview with Treliving.

Great interview, sounds like they have really high hopes for our goalie prospects

Time will tell about this trade as with all trades.

His age is a concern for me as well is his overall goaltending. Not sure Smith is the answer for next season let alone 2 seasons.

Age isnt a concern for me. Goalies can go longer at older ages. Very different from other positions. A goalie at 35 years old can still perform at an elite level.

As evidenced by the more than 30 combined playoff wins this year by Rinne, Anderson and Lundqvist.

All three goalies lost their respective series against a younger goalie.

Last year the two goalies in the finals were both under 27 years of age.

The last starting goalie to win the cup over the age of 30 was Tim Thomas.

The numbers for successful goaltenders over the age of 35 are not fantastic. Smith could buck the trend, but the trend is the trend for a reason.

I realize all that.

All I am saying is Smith can still perform at a high level despite his age. I wasn't trying to pin us as Cup favorites or anything.

All that says is that they are old - when you're the oldest goalie, when you eventually lose, it is going to be to someone younger than you.

But using your same argument, those 3 goalies won 6 series against goalies younger than them.

It's a precarious spot for a GM to be in.

Your core is young and almost ready, but maybe not quite. Good enough that you need to backstop them as they can win now, but not at a point where you want to go all in, as the window is much longer than just next season.

He had to find a goaltender that would be good enough to help the team win now, but avoid plugging the position with a long term contract at big coin blocking the way for what's coming up.

I would have been happy if Mason would have done a two year deal but I'm guessing the only way to avoid 4+ years was to acquire a goaltender with term left.

As I've said I've always been on that train and I like Smith more than MAF and Howard.

Rinne, Anderson and Lundqvist

Two of those goalies played head-to-head so someone had to loose, before Lundqvist lost to Anderson he beat the best goalie in the league and then Stanley cup champs beat the other two.

Can they actually go ahead and find an elite level at 35 and then perform there?

Tim Thomas did. He had played 4 NHL games by the time he turned 30. He won the Jennings and his first Vezina the year he turned 35. He had his best statistical season and won the Cup the year he turned 37.

Dwayne Roloson had his two longest playoff runs after the age of 35.

The 2011 Eastern Conference Final saw 37 year-old Thomas defeat 41 year-old Roloson 1-0 in Game 7.

I grant you this but submit they are statistical anomalies. Thomas especially. How is Smith trending?

More likely, Mike Smith is an old guy who is, what, 5 years from his last impact season, played for years for a coach that emphasized team D on a budget team that didn't spend on scorers, and is basically a coin toss on a team that is arguably on the uptick but really not established at being good defensively.
