I know he's a fan favourite but let's look past that.
He's the best tradable asset the Flames have.
- what is the return?

Wait? Brodie, a legitimate #1 defenseman is expendable because of a b unch of question marks that haven't been able to crack an NHL lineup on a regular basis? I'd also hardly refer to Kulak or Wotherspoon as a "glut" of NHL ready defensemen.

This has nothing to do with his last game, but the entire season.
Brodie does not leave a crater of a hole because there are replacements in the short term and we have an abundance of players who have the potential to as good as Brodie is playing now.
Brodie last season doesn't get traded. Completely agree. But Brodie this season is replaceable within the system. I strongly believe that. Perhaps the player isn't as flashy but honestly, that flash is what's getting Brodie in trouble. That and his refusal to continue skating while making an outlet pass.
I don't know what shifts you guys are seeing that make Brodie a player that you don't trade no matter what, but I don't see it.
As for Backlund, He's our best Center, he is not more of a tradeable asset as that leaves the Flames in rough shape down the middle with Bennett slowing in his progression the last few weeks.
Long term, Kylington, Andersson, Wotherspoon slide into 6/7 roles while Kulak and Jokipakka shore up the 2nd and 3rd LD.
|
What does Brodie provide that Kulak and Jokipakka don't? What kind of stupid question is this? What does he bring? NHL ability for starters, more importantly top pairing ability. Brodie is one of hte best passing defensemen in the NHL and is significantly better (even when he's not at his best) than Kulak or Jokipakka in every single facet of the game.

Landeskog asking price is high
Asking price is a top level d-man and a 1st +
Some are saying price is outrageous for a guy who might be a 2nd liner
Belief is Avs will make moves in the off season when more teams can be involved (ie. salary cap)
Avs need to decide if it is full tear down or retool
Some say Roy saw this coming and that is why he left on his own terms rather than be fired in November
Wild not willing to move any D despite being deep in that position.
Not going to trade one of their D despite likely going to lose one in the expansion draft
Nothing new to report on Olympic participation
Strategy of NHLPA and IIHF is to put pressure on Bettman
IIHF discussing looking at alternatives to avoid shootout after WJC gold medal match
Still preliminary, but ideas like 10 mins of 5v5 followed by 10 mins of 3v3 and similar are being disscused
Vegas has started talking to College free agents, they can't make offers yet

I thought we all agreed that Brodie gets a pass this year because of his fiance's MS diagnosis. You try being 25 and dealing with that, see if your job performance doesn't suffer in the short term.
The team put a lot of work into Brodie. Trading him now is positively bizarre.

That's rich for Landeskog but I can see 1st rounder and a bottom pairing D.

She was diagnosed at the beginning of last season.

Not that I disagree with your sentiment necissarilt, but what do you mean you thought we'd all agreed? When has that ever happened on here (and why would we want it to), and since when did this site have one collect conscious?

Why would the Avs do that?
A middish pick in a weak draft for a young top 6 forward
Why would they do that?

I would be fine with the Flames moving a cap hit (Brouwer), our 1st rounder, and any D prospect for Landeskog. I can see why the Avs wouldn't though but to ask for a top Dman, 1st and more that will never happen for a 50pt winger with a few concussions under his belt

Landeskog price is set really high for during the season maybe. Would rather trade in the off season so either have someone blow your socks off or wait till you want.

Wouldn't be so sure the Flames will be able to re up Brodie for what he will want given the dollars given to Hamilton and Giordano. These terms will overlap so one will likely be out of the equation down the road. It may be existing contracts and not the level of his play that leads Brodie elsewhere.

A middish pick? Well I guess that depends who is trading. Hamilton fetched a middish pick and 2 2nd rounders. I'm suggesting a 1st rounder and an NHL defenseman, likely someone on a decent contract. Is that so ridiculous compared to Hamilton and Hall trades? NHL defensemen are valuable commodities.
Why would Avs do that? The team they have doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

The Avs are bad because their bottom 6 includes Bourque, Comeau, Colborne, Iginla. If they trade Landeskog it's not going to be for a bottom pairing d-man and a first rounder.

I disagree, if you don't have a good bottom 6 then you're going to have a hard time winning games. If you have a bottom 6 (or even bottom 9) as bad as the Avs then you're almost guaranteed to fail.
Mackinnon, Landeskog, Duchene should be looked at as part of the solution and they're not trading one of their only good forwards away for a first rounder in a weak draft and a bottom D-man.

Bottom 6 is the difference between a Stanley cup winner and the team that came 2nd.
It is not the difference between a good team and a bad team. Chicago is a key example of exactly that.
