ESPN Boston writer Jeff Cox guesses it is 50/50 Hickey goes pro.

He did say NJ was close to signing Kelleher a few weeks ago, but was wrong on that.

edit forgot the tweet:

Jeff Cox‏ @JeffCoxSports
With Keller official, guess on other BU early departures: McAvoy, Greenway, Forsbacka Karlsson gone for sure. Hickey, Fabbro, MacLeod 50/50.

Potentially eight players gone in one off-season, including Clayton Keller? Why would you stay to be on a rebuilding BU squad when you could potentially play in the Stanley Cup playoffs in three weeks?

If he likes the college life, wait until he gets to 'six figure pro athlete' life. Furthermore, he's from Leduc.

FURTHERMORE. Brad Treliving. Chill out.

As opposed to the cherry sums he'll be making with his undergrad from BU?

Sorry, you're right - a Bachelor's is the result of completing an undergrad. Which, given the current climate, means he's probably qualified to sell cars.

Excited about Hickey, hopefully he signs soon. IMO the Flames have really nailed the early D picks since Treliving took over (2014 3rd rd Hickey, 2015 2nd rd Andersson and Kylington, 2016 3rd rd Fox) ... so much more exciting than, say, drafting a guy like Kanzig early in the 3rd.

Hickey seems like a Justin Braun type potential. Good wheels, move the puck, smart plays, don't make too much noise which is good. We don't need him racking up points to be effective i guess is what i say.

Hope he signs, it'd do wonders for him to be a black ace and absorb the playoff environment.

Stockton's potential defense next season:

Kulak Andersson
Hickey Kylington
Healey Kanzig
Falkovsky

A lot of left hand shots so I'm not sure which guys will play on the right side.

Morrison, Wotherspoon, Culkin not back. Maybe Wotherspoon is back if they believe Andersson has a good chance to make the Flames.

the opportunity cost analysis is something each college athlete must do for themselves.

His analysis is this:

degree, with possibility of a contract, or UFA status

vs

no degree, contract with guaranteed minor league money and a signing bonus.

What projects better 5 years down the road? I can't say for sure.

Easy to forget how crazy expensive these US universities are too.

BU's website states that tuition, room+board, books, transportation, etc. costs undergrads roughly $70k USD per year.

A $92.5k signing bonus after taxes won't cover that for him to finish his final year. If you have a full ride scholarship, it's cash value may be worth more than 1 year's signing bonus.

A bachelor's degree is an undergraduate degree. Graduate degrees are those awarded after completing graduate studies, or advanced coursework in a discipline after earning a bachelor's/undergrad degree.

According to Hickey's player profile he is enrolled in the College of General Studies, which is pretty strange for a student in their third year. Normally GS is restricted to frosh and sophomore students before they commit to a degree path. Might not mean anything, but strange not seeing him committed to an undergrad degree path.

Unless he doesn't give a toss about school.

Out of curiosity, what is the timeframe/window for signing a college player in Hickey's situation? Do the Flames have a free run at him until the first day of classes in the fall?

they can sign him whenever they want. The only caveat is that as soon he signs, his college hockey career is over. But other than that, the Flames can sign him at any time as they own his rights until August 15 2018.

Players can also sign an ELC, play pro hockey and go back to classes in the summer to finish their degree. Gaudreau did so last year IIRC.
