Download Mendeley and put all of your PDF's in there, she is a great time saver.

http://www.mendeley.com/

We use it because of the group feature, being able to share papers among the entire department... might not be totally what you are looking for.. but worth checking out.

By citation machine do you mean bibliographical software? I used to use Reference Manager, which worked reasonably well, and have also used Endnote, but these days mostly use Zotero (which is free and can do quite a bit of stuff).

I can't begin to express how much I loathe citations.

Ok I get it, you want to see where I got my ideas/information from. That makes sense. But why do I have to put the source information in a specific, bizarre, erratic, irrational structure? Oh and Heaven forbid I have a comma accidentally italicized!

Endnote is kind of a pain, but in my experience, is the best of the bunch.

Referencing others is the main reason I didn't do too well on my senior thesis...

Not because I didn't do the reading and research, not because I didn't write my own unique thesis. But because I was too lazy to quote everything, so I wrote a really short thesis of my own research, basically ignoring all the pre-requisite material that people had studied... instructor was not impressed. I still don't agree with her saying that I needed a larger intro/background section- anyone who would read my paper (if she eventually spruced it up and published it) was going to be well versed in the topic, so why do I need to re-hash their findings again and again?

Meh.

Made me realize that grad school is probably not for me. I'm not that big of a BSer.

I use Papers. It's Apple only but organizes your PDFs and does references like Mendeley.

The last time I did a major paper, there was a firefox plugin that would pull the info from whatever you had - most of mine were journal articles that I downloaded from online repositories, and import it into Word.

It is called Zotero
