Good term considering the cap hit. He's a very solid all-around player and what Stajan could be if he ever realized his full potential.

Good deal if this year isn't an aberation.
Doesn't look great if he returns to his career norms and is a 40-50 point guy.

Even if he does return to being just a 50 point player this is an alright deal because of the term, and since he is such a strong 200ft player (IMO one of the top two way players in the league).
Good Signing.

Too bad he didn't go to UFA. Leafs might have tried to sign him.

I like it, short term pay a bit higher cap hit. I would put him right around that 5ish range regardless of this years production. Great all around player who has been a proven leader on that team. Great mentor for a guy like Berglund.

This is a really bad deal, I think he's a 4m max player and that would be an average deal, not a steal
guys don't usually make the leap at 29 and he is riding a 20% shooting percentage (career 9.9%)
He's basically scored double the goals this year than normal which would put him at 11 in 33 games, which is a good return but not worth 5.8m a year
the Blues have lost 2m in cap space a year by paying for a lucky 33 games
I would imagine that for the 3 years of the deal he's going to be closer to the 50ish point 2 way center

I see the timing of this deal also a preemptive strike against the cap going up. If it does in fact go up to where it is projected guys like Steen would get a ridiculous offer on the open market. The closer you let it slide to July 1st the more risk you run of having to compete with those offers.
This is a smart move by St. Louis and it will not hamper them moving forward.

Steen cashed in at the perfect time, but at least the term is not outrageous for St. Louis.

22 goals the first 33 games, who wants to bet he doesn't hit 40 now that he got his dough!

Darren Haynes @DarrenHaynes_CP
20 years ago, with over 750 pts on his NHL resume already, Thomas Steen made $750,000/season. His son just signed for over seven times that.
I think it's a good deal ... high AAV, but nice term. Win-win for both sides.

Pominville, Zajac, Elias (at his age), Horcoff, Staal, Riberio, and Wheeler.
The young guys that are better aren't really eating up any UFA seasons and signed the contracts as RFA's so it is hard to compare, would be much better if the tool would just compare UFA season contracts.
The reason the contract is decent is the short term. No dead years on the back end of the contract.

Good deal for both sides.
Some really good steals for teams up there in Pominville, St. Louis, Sharp and Tavares.

2 goals in his last 9 games... that's closer to his career average than his hot start was.
He might not even hit 30, to be honest.

Obviously missed Horcoff.
I would say Staal is much better and Wheeler and Ribeiro have shown more so far in their careers, but I also think I don't rate Steen as quite the 2 way player you do so that may be where a lot of our differences may be coming in.
