Not long after the penalty expires Sven Baertschi would pounce all over a rebound from a Sean Monahan shot for the easy tap in goal giving the Flames a 2-0 lead.

That was a beautiful pass for the tap-in, not a shot/rebound.

I was amazed at his poise on that play.

To look for your winger when chasing a puck down so close to the net is something special.

Butler played 17 minutes and I barely noticed him. The team as a whole didn't have too many defensive breakdowns. SOB had 1 play where he put the team offside right off a face-off, but other than that didn't notice him much either.

Great write up as usual, cringed at the comparison of Subban to Lidstrom. The play was great but Lidstrom would never be more (or even close) of a liability than an asset. PK's ego is a liability.

Unfortunately, I did not watch the game. I just watched the highlights.

Holy crap, JM made some incredible saves! Although in places, yes he looks shaky, he has actually been holding up remarkably well. We are not going to have Kipper-like goaltending for a long time. Gotta like the dude though.

Monahan has been doing really well. I have to say i'm impressed with his play. It has been far superior to what I was expecting. Not only that, I feel that him and Baertshi play well together. I do feel Baertshi has been struggling lately, but I think Monahan can make him better. There's nothing like a younger guy out-working and out-playing you to inspire you to play better yourself. Damn it Baertshi, shoot more!

There are so many ways in which we could improve, but I'm enjoying watching them play as it is. Go Flames Go!

He's obviously not Kipper but MacDonald seems scrambly, needs to work on his rebound control (some of those rebounds come out a LOOOOONG way). I just think he needs to be a bit calmer. If he's calm then the rest of the team is calm.

Other than that, I loved the stacked pads save! OLD SCHOOL!!! He also reminds me a bit of Vernon, just a lot taller!

I don't think that the Montreal rebuild pattern is a successful one. Last year's success will be an aberration.

The Flames tried the small skilled approach last year and have made a huge big shift to the more standard (sane) grittier style.

The Canadians are small and very easy to play against. Their "big" acquisition was Briere. That was a mistake for that team. Wideman went out of his way to punish Briere for crossing the blue line.

They were made their big move last year in the shortened season. Ottawa totally dominated them in their 5 playoff games.

Gallagher is spunky and is liable to get beat up pretty bad unless they move Prust up from the 4th line.

Maybe Emelin makes the Canadians that much bigger as a team.

I don't think MacDonald was shaky. That's the way he plays as it's not a pretty style and the reason he's a journeyman goaltender. Last night I thought he was the best player on the ice. He may not look fluid but he got the job done and made a lot of saves to preserve the victory.

You probably could have given the goat and the 2nd star of the game to Subban.

That penalty at the end of the game was selfish, stupid, the reason he has no business in Sochi and completely neutered any chance of Montreal tying it up.

Woah woah woah.I said he had a Lidstrom-esqe bounce pass on the second goal. That's a far cry from comparing him to Lidstrom. :-P

Butler had a great game last night.

Skated the puck out of danger, was jumping into the rush, played physical, and was strong defensively.

When Gio took that penalty Butler was out on the PK and had a great PK on that shift as well. Really strong game from him.

I could watch this all day. I love the way he spots the puck when he's behind the net then the rest of clip he's looking at Baertschi

Still the same problems for the last 7 years, this team doesnt know how to properly clear the zone. Scoreface needs to be put in "clearing the zone drills" constantly until he learns what to do.

Good game, fizzled near the end but thats to be expected with this team. Honestly the W's are nice but what I am looking for is constant improvement and I am seeing that.

We could have lost this game 4-3 and I still would have been pleased with the performance.

Nice job taking advantage of the new nets. That might have been an almost impossible play last year.

Best part of that play for me is Monahan doesn't rush it. He reads exactly how much time and space he has, uses the time to take a peak in the slot, and uses the space to glide to the puck and makes the play.
