While the final design could vary greatly from the one shown, I think it's fair to say that's there's a good chance Populous could be designing the new arena.

Something I'd like to see them try is instead of having 'canned' music, a cool house band a la late night talk show. Live music creates great energy.
Organ player can be part of the band...

Lol talk show.
I do agree about having a band in the concourse ... I've experienced it in Staple and At united center.
With that said... It would have to be in the new stadium.... We have stupid cars that take up so much space in our already.
I do hope they divide the levels for concourse like in staples and united.

I'm talking right above the zamboni entrance or something.
A few years back they had this dude pull out a drum set at Rogers, and he'd kill it during a break. Even with a beat kit only it got the place going.

I see that Populous concept, and I keep on imagining that incident in Buffalo where the scoreboard fell to the ice, except now the roof can fall around the scoreboard!
I'm kidding of course. I think it's a neat concept.

King comments on the Populous animation:
http://metronews.ca/news/calgary/926...arena-concept/
Quote:
But, despite the buzz generated by a recent episode of Daily Planet, Ken King told Metro there’s nothing “tangible” about the concept video.
“That was one of a number of concepts that we’ve looked at and continue to look at,” King said in an interview. “We’ve made no determinations.”
He suggested officials with U.S.-based architecture firm Populous “regret” using the Flames brand in a concept video.
King declined to comment further, saying the team will announce plans for a new arena when ready. No timeline was provided.

The Soviet lunar programme was shrouded in less secrecy than this new arena project. At least they acknowledge that they have been looking at the design.

This guy is a bigger flip flopper than John Kerry. Sheesh.
PS - Metro journalists - at least credit CP when you publish your stories. Tsk tsk.

That's a given. No matter where it is or what the roof is like, the new arena will be built to maximize revenue; so lots of suites and multiple concourses to maximize sales. Lines are bad for business in an arena.

As far as I can tell King's only ability is to speak and say nothing. I never bother to listen to any of his interviews/speeches anymore.

More from King:
http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...621/story.html
Quote:
“We have presentations from, oh, six or eight architects, etc.,’’ he explained Thursday morning. “We’ve had several different designs (submitted). This is more an accident than anything.
“It’s no secret that we’re involved in a new arena concept. We need one and are working towards that.
“What you saw was one of the concepts. We said ‘Look, we’ve got an 18,000-20,000 seat building but we want to be able to turn it into a 7,000-seat facility, as well? But not with drapes, etc. So what can you do?’ That was one of the concepts brought forward. Period.
“This piece is one concept from one architect in response to ‘Hey, how do we do this?’ This is a small internal piece of a bigger design which has not been adopted.
“It’s a neat concept. But we haven’t hired them, retained them, nothing of that nature. It sits in a basket of different choices. We don’t even know if you could practically do it ... at the cost.’’
|
Quote:
We’ve been working for years on this,’’ said King. “So we’re closer to some of the decisions of what we want. There’s a process of what do you want to build, then there’s a process of how do you build it, when do you build and where do you build it.
“We are not ready for that. At some point we will be. Sooner than later, I think. But I don’t want a death watch ... Is it next week or next month? When?
“We have exciting, unbelievably ambitious desires with this project that we hope come to fruition. We still have some hurdles to
“So the speculation has always existed. We’re working on it. We’ve been working on it a long time. And when we’re ready to unleash it on the world, we will.’’

I'll be on my death bed when the Flames finally announce the arena.
This has been painfully slooooooooooooow. Then we'll likely have to deal with the public money battle.

Not that long, but I hope I can drive on the ring road to get to the new arena, just not sure which will be done first.

I guess this thread can go back into hibernation for another 3 to 4 months now. Then someone can crack another joke at the thread title and idle speculation can begin again!
