I'm so glad I quit that disgusting habit. When the bars went non-smoking, in Calgary, that helped a ton!

I don't see how these are supposed to turn off smokers. If you're already addicted you'll still buy them. The same philosophy could be applied to anything. How would you like to buy a Mars bar and see a picture of Rita McNeil on it?

Do you think it may deter people who havent started smoking yet? That gross picture may make some 16 year kid from Sask trying to fit in with his 'crew' think twice about smoking.

And to your horrible Mars bar analogy, in the States, kids Happy Meals from McD's have a disclaimer that eating the fries may cause cancer. Does that make you think twice about maybe not stuffing your obese mouth full of fries?

I think the spoiler tag is pretty much implied by the title.

For the record bud, I don't smoke. It's disgusting. I have a couple of friends that do and they just ignore the warnings, which is why I don't see how these are supposed to turn away people who are already addicted.

When I worked in retail liquor in BC (where you gotta sell smokes), people would always request packs without certain of the pictures (the stillborn and the lung being the most requested to be avoided). So maybe if they put the most vile things on there possible maybe it could actually work.

I guess so, but did you notice any actual decrease in people buying cigarettes due to the graphic images?

I think the more shame you put on people, and the more inconvenient you make the habit, the more people there are that will kick the habit.

Addiction doesn't have to be the end of the line. People can quit (I'm an ex-smoker myself, and making smoking "uncool" was a motivating factor for quitting).

(The Rita McNeil thing is funny though, and it's a reasonable point. Maybe we should use the same tactics to fight obesity. It's a huge problem just like smoking).

Oh definetely not. I just kinda found it funny. If people are so grossed out by the pack, why not tape another sticker over it?

Extra spoiler tags for the images certainly won't hurt, added.
